I'd have to say charcoal for me every time.
As for what type, I've just scaled down from the large-ish one I had before that had lasted me 3 years to a medium sized Webber kettle model and it's fantastic. I was finding that the larger one was getting too hot to cool nicely on it given cooking for 4 - 8 was not covering more than 50% of it.
The Webber just seems to be ideal
