Its a friday night piss up place.
Great post, so constructive. Its a friday night piss up place.
If you're gonna diss the guy's ideas FFS post an alternative.
OP, I've been to the Shampan many times and never had a bad meal, although it was featured on a TV documentary about dirty kitchens recently...still, I like to challenge my immune system and I'm sure it's no different from any of the other rat-infested stholes in the Lane.
Its 2010 , there is google .
He's asking for personal recommendations on a discussion forum, nothing wrong with that whatsoever.
.
Brick lane is not INDIAN. Its a dump selling cheap nasty meat in rather unclean kitchens etc
Lahore on Commercial Road is worth a visit . Not Pure INdian , but excellent and not pricy and you can hold your head up with pride that you never ate in Brick lane !!

Re: the annoying poster - what a complete wker!
Anyway back to topic, if you head down through Brick Lane, down into Aldgate hunt out the Empress, this restaurant has won numerous awards, has fantastic service and the food is fantasic!
A quick "google" on Empress will bring up reviews, menu and location details.

The term 'Indian Restaurant' is largely meaningless, anyhow. I'd say 90% of so-called "Indian Restaurants" in this country are owned by Bangladeshi's. And the dishes pander to UK palates.
Try these for proper, authentic Punjabi / Pakistani food in London:
1. Tayyabs: Buzzing atmosphere. Lamb chops, fish tikka, keema (lamb or chicken), dry meat all star performers.
2. Needo Grill: Shorter queues than the above, slightly cheaper prices too. The chicken biryani is fantastic. Not quite the same overall ambience, though.
3. Lahore Original Kebab House: The takeaway tikka rolls are to die for.

Brick Lane is pretty poor for curries, I've been a few times when I haven't had a choice and the food has been greasy, lacking in flavour and quite crudely prepared.
If you want decent Indian food prepped by Indians as opposed to Bangladeshis then head to Wembley, Kingsbury, Southall, Hounslow etc.
In Wembley, Chennai Dosa do very cheap and extremely tasty South Indian food, totally different to the usual curries and ridiculously cheap, less then £10 a head.
In Hounslow, Karahi Express opposite Hounslow West tube station is absolutely awesome, I love their paneer and friends swear by their mixed grills and butter chicken. They also allow you to bring your own booze. £15 buys you an absolute feast.
Reetas in Southall is also well regarded and do good kebab rolls.
If you have to stay in Central then Imli on Wardour Street is pretty good although a fair bit more then Brick Lane.
