Why are they always dented? No other tinned product in the supermarket seems to suffer, it's not brand dependant, nor store dependant, I just can't get my head round it & why haven't those ruthless machines where we buy our weekly shopping noticed and sorted it out? It's been going on for years.

I hate tinned tomato'es with a passion...

BUT if I've got a hangover, I can eat them hot with brown sauce and vinegar biglaugh

Get a tin from the back, may not be dented!

If they're dented get a discount! The protective coating that stops the metal reacting with the contents could be compromised (it wont be!) and as a result they should sell you them cheaper for the gamble! So get dropping cans!

Sensible post alert. I think it's because the shelf-stackers always move the dented tins to the front just to make sure they get sold. The ones behind should be all nice and cylinderically.

I adore tinned toms. If i use less than a tin in anything, add a splash of worcester sauce and scoff with a spoon right out the tin cloud9

I would echo Mel's original point, the % of dented tinned tomatoes vs other tinned products is baffling!

When I was back home in the UK I found the same - now I'm in Asia its also true. Pick up a tin of beans, whatever, it rare to have a dented can. Tinned tomatoes - its common, plus when you see there is low stock the last lot of them are always knackered

One of life's great mysteries, any ideas?

Probably because the metal in the cans has been reduced to the lowest guage possible to reduce costs. So any rough handling at all causes damage. And they're mostly canned in Italy.......

Heinz have been doing this for years..the savings on millions of cans/day are huge.

Melvin - cartons are the way forward. They are square and stack much better in the cupboards.

Do they last longer than the tinned variety as about twice a year I have to throw away half a dozen, what looks like tinned pea-green cheesecake affairs?

I may be exaggerating. . .

Talking of costs.

Have they tinned tomatoes always cost around the 90p/£1 mark or have I just been ignorant?

I watched a 4 pack pass through the checkout and come up £3.96. I'd have got more for my money in the alcohol aisle.

Two or three years ago, tins of tomatoes were around 35p-50p a tin — but then there was some sort of crop failure & prices of tinned tomatoes, tomato puree etc. rocketed. Call me cynical but I have noticed that the tins which cost almost £4 per 4 are quite often on 'special offer half price'.........

I wouldn't pay £1 for a tin of chopped toms in a million years!
