I can't imagine an easier way to get yourself in A&E with alcohol poisoning.

Been reading this after realising I have a few different rums in stock,

Havana Club 7yo
Ron Zacapa 23
Mount Gay Extra Old
Bunderburg
Bunderburg Over Proof (57.5%) ... rough as you like...great BBQ lighter
Morgan Spiced

Then again the 63 bottles of random spirits/liqueurs I have collected over the past 18mths for cocktail parties tends to put most pubs/bars to shame...

Mount Gay gets my vote. Finished off a bottle of that between friends last Sunday. Great stuff.

i bought this a couple of weeks ago and am pretty disappointed in it. there is no way that is a 23yr old rum. i know it says a blend of 6-23yrs but it's way overpriced for sure. keeping this one for mixing.

Try to track down some Lambs Spiced - not the dark Navy (which is great with a good fiery Ginger Beer like KA Abbotts, but the Spiced variant). Better than the old Sailor Jerry, and knocks spots off the new stuff.

If the sun ever comes out again (although apparently we're in a drought?!?) then give some a try with some cloudy apple juice and a slice of lemon. Sounds odd, but trust me, it's brilliant - like cinnamon apple pie in a glass!

If you want to push the boat out a bit try a bottle of Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserve (from Venezuela from memory...) - all on it's own, it's absolute nectar!

Absolutely delicious. Especially with a cigar as the sun goes down.

We were recently visited Cuba and took the opportunity to try a few different rums, aside from our usual staple Havana Club 7 year old.

The Ron de Santiago 11 year old was absolutely divine.

Wouldn't pay retail but I bought mine duty free. At the mo Mount Gay extra old is my preferred (it is good to have variety in the house though)

Be aware that Rum has different age statement regulations than, say, Scotch. With whisky, the age on the bottle has to match the YOUNGEST whisky contained. Rum is not so well regulated (no Scotch Whisky Association) so the number can refer to the oldest whisky contained - with no hint to the proportions. Ron Zacapa is nice, but i agree, it aint 23 years old!!

personally, i go for:

Sailor Jerry for spiced
Pirat or Mount Gay XO for a good gold rum
El Dorado 15 / 21 for posh stuff

i bought mine duty free as well. i do wish they would increase the selection compared to the whisky. with that in mind, LHR or schiphol for rum buying, which is best? [have the option to go through either of the two next week].

i've said it many times before, but if you like sailor jerry, try mount gay or appletons vx at 15-16quid a bottle with tesco almond coke. it's like going from analogue to digital.

I have started to drink more and more rum and have found a favourite

If you can, get Pampero Aniversario Rum. It is a dark sugar rum from Venezuela...... my favourite.

I believe Mr T stock the standard Pampero for a very reasonable price smile
