Several listed already, so I'll add....

Pearl Jam - Ten (1991)
Soundgarden - Superunknown (1994)
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine (1992)

- albums that define the 90s.
Excellent. I'd also throw in;

Alice in Chains - Dirt (1992) - really filthy grunge, maybe slightly less complex than soundgarden but well paced, instantly cutting riffs and that raw voice of layne staley, always missed as he is.
Highlights: "Would?", "Rain When I Die", "Them Bones"

Tool - Opiate EP (1992), and Undertow (1993) - Undertow is tool's first album, and IMO their best, at times slow, grinding, hurtful, and then fire and brimstone. Opiate is a must if you want a taste of their raw early material, pounding bass and crunchy guitar.
Highlights (undertow): "Prison Sex", "Flood", "Bottom"

Nirvana - Bleach (1989) - apart from the obvious, this is an often overlooked album but fast paced, short but sweet, buzzing and raw. I actually prefer it over nevermind.
Highlights: "About a Girl", "Love Buzz", "School"

Melvins - Stoner Witch (1994) - completely disjointed, wierd, grumbling and moaning but at the same time fantastic. Often credited with influencing Tool and other modern grunge-punk-metal.
Highlights: "June Bug", "Roadbull", "Queen"

UK Stuff -

Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Are You Normal? (1992) - early uk alt-rock/punk/indie/whatever. An absolute goldmine of a band oft forgotten. Energetic and melodic, a simple but distinctive sound from two bassists makes every song a pleasure. Upbeat tones combined with often self centered lyrics and the uncertain moods of a young man often makes for very emotive listening. Absolutely my favourite band and very difficult to pick this album apart from the other two.
Highlights: "Legoland", "Swallowing Air", "Not Sleeping Around"

808 State - United State 90 (1990) - a detatchment from the other bands - early 90's electronica. Clear, singing tones and classic 90's beats. At times industrial, this is no club junk, but genuinely ingenious music that lightens you out and shuts you down all over the place. I would also recommend EX:EL (1991) which contains some more lyrical songs (even some bjork!)
Highlights: "Pacific 202", "Cobra Bora", "CEik"

Yep, great album. I do enjoy a singalong to "25 Minutes to Go".

Black metal it may be but it's vision is truly staggering - all music lovers should give it a go once in their lives imo

Faith No More - The Real Thing - 1989

Hadn't heard much of them but then heard Epic on the radio so got my hands on this album - was pleasantly very surprised.

Don't think anything else they did was as good as this one

Ritual De La Habitual - Jane's Addiction

Unlike any other band, Jane's are one of my all time favourites and this is their best work. The 11 minute long 3 days has it all, including an amazing guitar solo, and Been Caught Stealing reminds me of growing up in the 90's. These guys are often credited as starting the whole alternative rock movement and you can see why this inspired so many people to pick up instruments.

The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails

A concept album from the angry Mr Reznor which is epic in every single way. Loud, punchy and full of memorable songs, this is a must listen to for anyone, whatever genre you are into. I reckon he's the most gifted musician alive today and this album is his masterpiece.

This Will Destroy You - This Will Destroy You

I doubt anyone has ever heard of these guys but they are a Texas post-rock band that creates beautiful, haunting instrumental rock. The Mighty Rio Grande is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Frames - Oceansize

UK rockers that are a little bit like Radiohead but much better. This album is a collection of songs that contain so much attitude and are so atmospheric, it is a great one to drive to.

The Earth Is Not A Cold And Dead Place - Explosions In The Sky

The songs on here are so melodic, Your Hand In Mine is one of the best tunes written, I reckon. Instrumental rock for everyone, especially anyone who has ever liked a single Mogwai, Sigur Ros, etc. song.

You Sir, have excellent taste in music.

I highly recommend to you, or anyone for that matter who likes this music - to check out 'God is an Astronaut', 65 days of static, Bonobo.

Enjoy

I still love listening to Neds. I went to see them play in Brum about two years ago, and nearly died in the mosh, amongst fellow fat sweaty 30 somethings squeezed into Neds T-shirts.

Buck 65 - This is Buck 65. Imagine a Nova Scotian cross between Eminem and Tom Waits.

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing. Classic. Just brilliant stuff.

Oceansize - Frames

Mogwai - Young Team. Wow. Just wow. Katrien, Mogway Fear Satan. Still mind blowing

Sigur Ros - (). Who needs song titles? Who needs lyrics in a language? Immense.

Aphex Twin - Classics. I can't believe how fresh sounding this remains

Not one Iron Maiden album yet!
Iron Maiden,
Somewhere In Time
Metal
1986

Has to be their best album, its the one play more than any of their others. Has some monster riffs in wasted years, sea of madness, stranger in a strange land.....

Up the Irons!
