Are you sure? I toured with him in the mid '90s, he had a fanatical following then, plus groupies who followed him through Europe. Can't have been for his looks. [quote]
I'll stand by my quote - he was a very well liked and reknowned drummer but it is only now post SYL that he is getting the mass attention that he deserves - he led the way for so long in metal and is finally receiving the rewards he deserves (personally hearing Individual Thought Patterns changed my life as to what was possible on drums.)

I have to say I thought Gene Hoglan is pretty average, he's good but seems like any other metal drummer to me. Also the fact that he's trigger to F k and uses beat detective. I saw him at Sonisphere 2010 and thought again that he was off form, but to be fair so were the rest of the band IMHO.

Derek Roddy has turned into a clinic bore now, which is a shame. Didn't like the hatchet job they did on Aquiles Priester either.... Gotta say, as a musician, but a non-drummer, Mangini would have been my choice. Can't imagine anyone turning up and then turnIng it down?

Overrated - Young Dave Weckl Underated - Older Dave Weckl?
Overrated - the rock, metal, death metal genre appears to be full of overrated drummers where non-drummers look on and say "ooh fast must be good" or "ooh big kit, double bass 16ths; must be very good"
Personally I'd say Gavin Harrison is probably one of the most underated - as in not known of by a wider audience. He seems to be able to do the technical thing without making it only appreciable by other drummers. He's ability to play in bizzare time signatures and yet with feel and accessibility is something that many other drummers lack completely.

Can't imagine anyone turning up and then turnIng it down? Roddy admitted that he only did the audition because he was asked - he had no interest in being DT's drummer. I first saw Mangini with Extreme and he was incredible - he is a very good fit for Deam Theatre. Another completely under-rated drummer is Dave McClain fromm Machine Head.

Ian Lancs said: But thats not the real Animal on the soundtrack. The real Animal was a much more impressive drummer and one I was very proud to have played with on quite a few occasions and was often my late night night drinking buddy on tour. The late Ronnie Verrell, was for me one of the greatest drummers of our time. He swung like no one else I've ever played with and was always a true character as well as a great musician. The real Animal can be heard in the famous drum battle with Buddy Rich: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_BmeBfV-O4&fea... There's quite a few video's of Ron and the real Animal on youtube these days it seems.

In general good drummers are almost always overlooked unless they are particularly 'larger than life'/wild. Two drummers who I think are particularly good and interesting are Glen Kotche of Wilco and John Convertino of Calexico. Whilst very different in style both play to serve the song above all else. Wilco - I am Trying to Break Your Heart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-oimbtVdf4Calexico - Wash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDat_7_ewiM
