Modern recommendations can be quite parochial on the ear, but as has been mentioned- MF Doom / Viktor Vaughn / Kenng Geedorah / Dr Octagon also try Madlib the Beat Konducta.
If that's a bit left field, you need to go back in time - Pete Rock & CL Smooth, early Wu-Tang, Public Enemy, Mobb Deep, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane.
Modern Rap is mainly poop. Dre should have retired after the Chronic with nis bizatches and endo; and Kanye should be bludeoned to death by those 2 c**ts from Kris Kross.

Not the best but certainly a cracker is 'Growing up in the hood' by Compton's Most Wanted. There is just something quite sinister about the music that makes my hairs stand on end.

Glad to see "Shook Ones Part 2" already mentioned, apart from that Wu-Tang's "Protect ya neck" is a real beauty mainly for the lines; "First of who's your A&R? A mountain climber who pays an electric guitar? Well he don't know the meaning of dope when he's looking for a suit and tie rap that's cleaner than a bar of soap"! Mega.

Modern Rap is mainly poop. Dre should have retired after the Chronic with nis bizatches and endo; and Kanye should be bludeoned to death by those 2 c**ts from Kris Kross. your clearly blinded by hip hop from modern artists, the singles off there albums are mainly used to break them into the mainstream, youll find that alot of these "modern" artists have some properly good hip hop tracks on there album. your kanye west comment is ignorant, listen to his most recent realease, my beautiful dark twisted fantasy, theres tracks co-produced with q-tip, pete rock and rza to name a few, its a blinder. your dr dre comment is f king ridiculous, 2001 was a hip hop classic that pushed the boundries of production and still sounds fresh today and you didnt even mention it. the chronic is one of the all-time greatest hip hop albums ever. just because the masses enjoyed it doesnt make it s t. hipster.
