think cobain credited this album as something of an inspiration.
I think he did, he credited the Pixies along with the Beatles and the Melvins. Again, it's only one track though!

There appears to be a theme running in here already....

There are some great albums nominated, but there's also a lot of 'rock'

Are we (rock fans) the only ones that appreciate albums or are we the only ones with nothing better to do on a Saturday night! (apart from TheHeretic, he's off with the Martians :P)

Well, I was going to suggest Brighton Rock, from 'Sheer Heart Attack' by Queen. smile

It is more than narration. It is 9+ minutes long. The Eve of the Way... "Dum Dum derr!"
I know...was just messing smile
I knew there was something wrong....I've just dug out my old LP and side 1 LP1 is only 2 tracks....therefore that is not allowed :P

Showing my age, the first Iron Maiden album has three fantastic songs to start.

Not just the first couple of tracks, but the entirety of side 1 of the LP (yes, I am old!)

Misplaced Childhood by Marillion

From "Psuedo Silk Kimono" to "Heart of Lothian" it is a work of genius.

'Introducing The Style Council'

Long Hot Summer

the sublime Headstart For Happiness ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7XZoIaZ1fk&fea...

or one of several excellent live versions ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=646erHJ6ug0

and Speak Like a Child

three tracks that set the tone and set out the band's stall perfectly. But 1983, god, where's it gone?

From a very narrow window about when I was born:

Black Sabbath - (band/album/song) - 'ooh we just invented Heavy Metal'.

Deep Purple - Fireball

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog/ Led Zep 4

A bit more modern - best opening riff ever, especially as they are a rather inconsistent band: Fu Manch - 'Evil Eye' from The Action is Go.

Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen.

1.) Faron Young
2.) Bonny
3.) Appetite
4.) When Love Breaks Down

Goes downhill after that but as those are four of the greatest pop songs ever written its hardly a surprise.

I hate this misconception.

Best opening track after Over the Rainbow/Kill The King (which has already gone)?

Sol Caliente - From the album Mainstream by Quiet Sun.

Here are a couple of really good examples of the first three tracks working together to build expectation of an outstanding album - that is then matched by what comes next:

Out of Our Minds by Melissa Auf der Maur. Slow, brooding, getting deeper and deeper as the tracks go on. Brilliant concept album.

Without You I'm Nothing by Placebo. Hits hard and then keeps going.

But on a more serious point - this is surely becoming a lost art with ipods and whatnot devaluing the album as a package. How many people these days actually listen to every track on an album, in order, from beginning to end? The death of the LP and CD brought an end to that, in my view.
