I disagree, Nevermind killed the 'Big Hair Metal' bands practically overnight.
Nirvana didn't kill hair metal, hair metal collapsed under it's own weight after a few years of diminishing returns. It was the proliferation of awful bands like Warrant and that sort of thing that signalled that the genre had long since passed tipping point. Hair metal had gone so far past parody that the rock market was ready for literally anything else. The fact that Nirvana and a load of other st bands briefly arrived to corner the marketplace was neither here nor there as the passing of time has shown them to have had relatively little staying power. Grunge was all rather a brief moment that was more about the mood and people wanting a 'back to basics' aesthetic in music post-hair metal.
With hindsight, Grunge burnt itself out quickly, speeded by the demise of Nirvana and Nu Metal soon took over.
