Carcass - Surgical Steel: One of the grand daddies of death metal, still pummelling in 2013, nearly 20 years since the incredible Heartwork.
I remember being so proud of myself learning that title track on guitar as a teen. That and "Slaughter of the Soul" by ATG were such fun songs to play.sagarich said:

Alter Bridge - Fortress
+1Really enjoying their latest album.
Lead singer of Creed, Scott Stapp's latest album ("Proof of Life") is good too.
QOTSA, Alice in Chains - excellent
Shinedown, Amaryllis (2012 tho') - excellent
Avenged Sevenfold, Hail to the King - excellent (tho' I agree it's not as good as Nightmare, for example)

Altered state by a band called tesseract is one of the most complete and accomplished albums I have ever heard.and I've heard a lot of albums!!
It is not only the best album of 2013 I would have it in my top five albums of all time and that's no exaggeration.
That's a really cool album! Thanks for the tip! It is not only the best album of 2013 I would have it in my top five albums of all time and that's no exaggeration.

NIN - Hesitation Marks
QOTSA - Like Clockwork
Alice in Chains - The devil put the Dinosaurs Here
I don't mean this in a rude way, I'm very out of touch.QOTSA - Like Clockwork
Alice in Chains - The devil put the Dinosaurs Here
Are any of them still doing good material?
My received opinion was that all those bands were long past their best.

glad to spread the love!! I can't believe they aren't bigger than they are already. their first album "one" is also a blinder as was their ep of acoustic stuff last year.it was actually tesseract that compelled me to start the "for fans of heavy music" thread three years ago.tuscaneer said:

WOOPS; I hadn't seen that someone had already recommended this. Yes; amazing album - both musically and sonically. The mix and production is amazing and the drum sounds are beautiful. Two of the band run their own studio called 4D (I think) and now produce for other bands also.Gompo said:
To those who like the Deafheaven album, how do you think it compares to Roads to Judah?
I liked RtJ (although need to remind myself of it), but only managed a couple songs of my way through Sunbather before I decided to turn it off/delete. Just seemed a bit boring/bland.
Personally I think its better than RtJ. They've upped the epicness and layered on more texturesI liked RtJ (although need to remind myself of it), but only managed a couple songs of my way through Sunbather before I decided to turn it off/delete. Just seemed a bit boring/bland.
