Carcass - Surgical Steel: One of the grand daddies of death metal, still pummelling in 2013, nearly 20 years since the incredible Heartwork.
I remember being so proud of myself learning that title track on guitar as a teen. That and "Slaughter of the Soul" by ATG were such fun songs to play.

Awesome to see those guys still going, broke my nose in a mosh pit at one of their gigs. I think I must have been 14, pleaded with the bouncer to let me in!

I think I probably play "Slaughter of the soul" every time I get my guitar out!

October Falls - The Plague Of a Coming Age. I've only listened to it a couple of times but sounds great so far

The new avenged sevenfold album 'hail to the king' is worth a listen if you like them, although not as good as the older stuff.

Another vote for Deafheavens Sunbather. It my album of the year.
Whilst not a new album this year check out Woods of desolation and tier album Torn beyond reason, it's stunning. They also released a new song on their soundcloud today, it'll be on their new album coming q1 2014

Lead singer of Creed, Scott Stapp's latest album ("Proof of Life") is good too.
QOTSA, Alice in Chains - excellent
Shinedown, Amaryllis (2012 tho') - excellent
Avenged Sevenfold, Hail to the King - excellent (tho' I agree it's not as good as Nightmare, for example)

To those who like the Deafheaven album, how do you think it compares to Roads to Judah?

I liked RtJ (although need to remind myself of it), but only managed a couple songs of my way through Sunbather before I decided to turn it off/delete. Just seemed a bit boring/bland.

Altered state by a band called tesseract is one of the most complete and accomplished albums I have ever heard.and I've heard a lot of albums!!
It is not only the best album of 2013 I would have it in my top five albums of all time and that's no exaggeration.
That's a really cool album! Thanks for the tip!

NIN - Hesitation Marks
QOTSA - Like Clockwork
Alice in Chains - The devil put the Dinosaurs Here
I don't mean this in a rude way, I'm very out of touch.

Are any of them still doing good material?

My received opinion was that all those bands were long past their best.
Listen to Johnny. QOTSA top form; AIC a band reborn, and amazing live last weekend. NIN I haven't yet bought but I shall because I've only read really positive reviews.

glad to spread the love!! I can't believe they aren't bigger than they are already. their first album "one" is also a blinder as was their ep of acoustic stuff last year.it was actually tesseract that compelled me to start the "for fans of heavy music" thread three years ago.

WOOPS; I hadn't seen that someone had already recommended this. Yes; amazing album - both musically and sonically. The mix and production is amazing and the drum sounds are beautiful. Two of the band run their own studio called 4D (I think) and now produce for other bands also.

Personally I think its better than RtJ. They've upped the epicness and layered on more textures

Thanks for the response, I like layers.. I will have to try and give them both a proper listen before the year's out.
