My brother has recently joined Martin Turners Wishbone Ash (Drums) and is about to embark on touring and recording duties for 2014.

Any fans in 'ere? smile

TBH, i'd not heard of them but apparently they were big in the 70's and still sell out venues worldwide!

Saw them in Manchester ( can't remember which venue probably the Apollo) around 1977/78, one if the best shows I ever went to.

Seen them several times, great band with a very distinctive sound.

Most memorable was 1980 in the Whitla Hall, Belfast when they were quite unbelievably loud. Louder than Motorhead or AC/DC. My mate, who played drums in a band, had to leave because he couldn't bear it! I stayed and couldn't hear for about three days...

I hope your brother has a great time with them!

Wishbone Ash were one of the top bands in the 70s, there was a slightly acrimonious split resulting in two bands touring now with the name of Wishbone Ash due to both of them containing members from the original line up. I usually get to see the band fronted by Andy Powell each year, his band plays a couple of gigs each year at a local venue in MK, the other Wishbone Ash fronted by Martin Turner also played at the same venue last year and I managed to get along to that one also.
Both have a very talented musicians playing for them and are well received by capacity audiences in the MK venue.
I also saw the original band play the Reading Festival in 1975!

Ha - agree with everything Barry - except you didn't see the original line up in '75!

I would have loved to see Ted (David) Turner in the line up live either in the early seventies or the late eighties, but sadly missed both.

First encountered WA during the tour for the "No Smoke..." album. Loved 'em, loved, loved, loved 'em. Never looked back since. My absolute favourite all time. Favourite track F*U*B*B and favourite album, probably "New England" - but it's a close call. The "Kermit" was - and still is - a great guitarist too. Have you heard Home? "Dreamer" et al....?

Andy is my favourite guitarist, though, of all time. Bold statement I know, but above everything else, I would listen to WA every time.

The only reason I don't follow them on social mejia and the like any more is because of this acrimonious dispute.

I have a simple, but harsh, comment. Wishbone Ash would have been absolutely unbeatable with a really good singer and some better lyrics. Don't get me wrong - I bought the "Walking the Reeperbahn" Album and play it often (have you even heard of it?) - I love "Firesign" for example. But, so many copied the formula, sometimes doing it better (Lynnrd Skynnrd et al) and so often the trump card was a singer.

Trying to keep an open mind, though!

Don't know what to say to that hehe They were BIG! Get listening.

Oh and the (probably) finest era - Ben Granfelt (or maybe Mark Birch?) in hindsight!

Have any of you found Ted Turner's album, "Eclektic Value" btw?

Really?.... great stuff.

Been a fan since the early seventies, seen them in various line ups more times than I can remember.

Don't want to get into the Andy Powell/Martin Turner debate though, except to say Martin Turner's one cool dude....cool

Dear R,

saw them twice in the '70s. Reading Festival & later Hemel Hempstead Pavilion IIRC.

Great live band at that time. However IM very HO they suffer from the one great album syndrome. Argus and that's about it.

Nonetheless best wishes to your brother, playing music for a living is a fine thing,

regards,
Jet

Blowin' Free is rarely off my playlist if there's any hint of sunshine...

One of the line ups gigged at the Maypole in High Hurstwood about 10 years ago - it's a tiny country pub! From those who were there it was still kwallatee however.

I don't really know anything about them apart from a few songs being quite funky. I have the LP with the pick of a cricket player holding a cricket ball. It was a record I picked up in a digging session one day.

There's the Rub. Their best one, IMO.

I was impressed with it. I can't remember the song but it was proper funky. Quite prog rockish.

What else would you suggest I listen to by them?

I remember seeing them as a wee lad at The Dominion Theatre Tottenham Court Rd (now We Will Rock You) on the Twin Barrels Burning Tour back in around 1982.

Strangely enough my friend has ben playing bass with Andy Powell's version of WA for many years now..

Good luck to your bro .. smile

Bob Skeat ???

If so, he's one of the finest bass players I've enjoyed seeing - say a big hello from PH!

And tying it back into "There's The Rub" mentioned above - he does F*U*B*B a treat!!!

(Listened to Hear To Hear on my commute this morning and then Switched to "Mountainside" off "Illuminations" - awesome track)

that's the chap. Nice player.
we often played with the same bands and covered for each other a few years back. I haven't bumped into him for a while though.

Met them before they were signed and ended up buying the whole band coffee and breakfast in the Macabre coffee bar just of Wardour Street if anyone remembers that.

Never liked them subsequently as that breakfast cost me, unexpectedly, rather a lot - they were totally skint and had assumed that I would be paying..........

Awesome band saw 'em many times in 70's with both original lineup and wisefield, I always thought the vocals suited their sound, which to me is 'Folky', My wife on other hand who loves folk music hates them even the There's the Rub and Argus albums which IMO are their 2 best LP's. She loves everything else I like musically but not WA confused
