Went last night. Disappointed.
Far too much performance art and theatricals and not enough singing. Who needs 27 band members, helicopters, shipwrecks, fish skeletons and giant birds. Just get the piano out and bloody warble. That's what I paid for.
Every song was preceded by a 10 minute vignette where characters played out a piece of theatre, often involving her son, who at one point did a 15 minute solo performance about the moon! I never paid for that. If he wants to be a performer, get down the local open mike spot and learn the trade.
Oh, for the days of 1979. Everything was much simpler then. She sang, she danced, and the high tech bit was spotlights on bin lids!!
At the end she thanks up for not taking pictures. Said she wanted it to be about people, not technology. This, after a show where she probably spend £5m on technology at the expense of her singing.
I would have been happy with her, a piano, a lead and base guitar, drums and keyboard. Everything else was not required.
Maybe I'm getting old and grumpy.

I think you missed the whole point of the show then. It was very clear from her previous performances 35 years ago, plus all of her videos since, and when these shows were announced that the performance as a whole is THE show, not just the songs.Far too much performance art and theatricals and not enough singing. It only goes to show that you can't please all the people all the time.
I read a comment from someone who went to the first night and was apparently unhappy all night and moaning because of the lack of 'Wuthering Heights'. The chances of her performing that number were always going to be slim and not just because of the register it's in.
The fact is that a large proportion of the audience would have been unhappy if it was Kate sitting at a piano all evening and as has been said, if you understand anything about her, you would know it is about the performance not just the song. The clues were all there - if you go back and look at every single live performance, including TV appearances, there is an element of theatricality in all of them.
It's a shame some people won't enjoy these nights, but it is inevitable.

Not all live performances - she did a straight-forward rendition of 'Running Up That Hill' at a Secret Policeman's Ball.I read a comment from someone who went to the first night and was apparently unhappy all night and moaning because of the lack of 'Wuthering Heights'. Well, she wasn't miming running up a hill and there wasn't any dry ice, but there were still lighting changes...I feared my comment might start some sort of contest to find the least theatrical KB performance
Let me put it this way; The least theatrical performance anyone could give would be standing still in front of a mic, dressed conservatively with nothing happening on stage. A rare sight, for any performer. The old MTV format 'unplugged' was the closest you'd get to this for a lot of musicians.
At the opposite end of the spectrum we have the likes of Bjork, David Bowie and Peter Gabriel who all incorporate some sort of theatre and performance into their act. You could say it's an intrinsic part of their music and their soul. This is where I see Kate Bush. Sometimes the performance doesn't involve elaborate costumes, lighting or confetti cannons but there's still something more to it than just playing an instrument and singing.
Actually, I think Kate Bush has probably taken some of what she's doing here from Peter Gabriel. If you get the chance to see his 'Back to Front' show, you'll see it starts off stripped down with minimal lighting (white only) and electronics but builds to a much more theatrical performance as the show goes on. When I first saw it, I was a little underwhelmed but then I watched the recording of it a few times and then saw just how carefully put together and well rehearsed the whole thing is. Sure, he doesn't dress up as a flower any more but there's a theatricality in almost every performance if you look for it.
The thing is, you could have gone to see Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' and come out afterwards complaining that half the time you couldn't see the band because some idiot built a bloody wall in front of the stage. To say there's too much theatre in a Kate Bush show is just as irrational. Especially when it's the first one for 35 years!

I'm sure her hard-core fans would have enjoyed it, but I would have been making for the door after 20 minutes.
