I'd be going to same stages/tents as you I think bar The Pixies (saw them at Glasto in 89 and got very bored).
Bored of the Pixies in 1989! Bet you were the only one, that was their hay day. Maybe you will like them more now they are in middle age.
Unreal.... but I guess it really helps if you'd followed them around the UK for 12 months previously and when one finally saw them at Reading Festival, Kim blew you a kiss as you were rolling across the front of the crowd.

hehe
Couldn't stand them then and care even less for them now, that said I'm the only person I know who saw Nirvana early on and thought they were rubbish too. I just didn't/ still don't get that whole American alt rock thing, oh and middle age has certainly not made my tastes Radio 2....just the opposite in fact.

hmm, last time I saw them live they were shyte, Finsbury Park in 2002 - BRMC were supproting and were much better

still a good spectacle I suppose
I was there too. Awful! All I remember was them doing covers of proper bands such as the Who & bottles of piss being thrown at the stage from the back & getting soaked. What a lovely place!

Have to ask... why did you go to see such bands then? Which early Nirvana shows were you at? Early shows were always a grunge fest of Mudhoney/Tadd line up of Sub Pop bands, seems odd you would even bother to go.

certainly wont be the same without Kim's "thanks, thanks a lot" (in New England accent) after every song... and how can they ever play Gigantic without her.

Saw them at Reading 91 doing a mid afternoon set, so didn't consciously pay to see them. I saw many of these bands at various festivals in late 80's/early 90's and just never got it, was pretty relieved actually when the Brit pop bands came through which arguably finished off grunge/US alt rock.

My musical tastes are fairly eclectic but these US/Sub Pop bands failed to get through my filter despite me and friends trying. As ever though with music it is very subjective, the beauty of festivals is you catch stuff you never expect to be brilliant and conversely hyped stuff you think you'll like just don't cut it.

BOT, enjoy if you're going to Glasto this year as you can't beat it as a festival.

You guys who are on your 5th or 6th Glastonbury on the trot how do you manage to get tickets, our first and only time was 2011 and it was epic however since then we've not been able to get tickets and it's not for want of trying either.
Same here, I went every year from early nineties but since it's change to online not a sniff , the last time I went I had to win a competition in the paper , really fed up of spending hr's trying to get through and yet some people get through every yearconfused

Trying again sunday morning, fingers crossed

OK, not an early Nirvana show then. I was also there that afternoon with the band who was on before them.... respect to anyone who can name them?

I'll let you win the pissing contest as now bored which takes some doing as I'd normally talk all day about music. Previous band must have been really tedious as well as don't remember them at all.

The point of the grunge thing was they were ordinary people wearing ordinary clothes unlike the cock rock scene that grunge killed.

You didn't even have to be much good at playing you just turned the distortion up and the volume to hide the fact, you just formed a band and got on with it.

Same way as britpop was just the beatles.

You don't get it, grunge was never anything new it wasn't trying to say look were the new thing it was never trying to be a trend, it was a groups who all happened to live/play around seattle who the media latched onto and hyped up.

You are 100% right I didn't get it and also didn't jump on any bandwagon to say I did at the time (not that I'm implying either of you 2 did) that I know many people did. Acid House that came just a couple of years before was exciting and was really the punk for people of my age, grunge was just a music derivative. The fact that people still feel strongly about grunge must mean these bands meant something to someone but not me and I'm just being honest in my view.

I agree with you britpop was also nothing new and would never pretend it was but it felt (as said earlier) like a cloud of gloom lifting from music. Some utter dross came from that as well along with some pretty memorable bands, records and gigs.

Oh and before you think I'm a middle of the road commercial radio listener trolling, my last gig was 65daysofstatic last Saturday so I do appreciate a bit of guitar and distortion.

Correct, and a few crossed the line into exactly cock rock territory, Pearl Jam did for one and even Soundgarden and then all the bandwagon jumpers. Nirvana never did, nor did Mudhoney (did I recently hear touch me I'm sick used on a commercial?) And this was years before Nevermind.

Persistence plays a part, but I have to say the last few years a group of us have all shared reservation details (and occasionally credit card details) to make sure everyone gets a ticket.

It was never especially easy. The first few times I went it was, erm, free. Ever since the super fence went up getting tickets has involved starting five minutes before the stated time and plugging away for as many hours as it takes.
