Genuine charisma. That's why people don't know what to make of it, we're not used to seeing it anymore.
If that's charisma I can only confirm how glad I am we don't see it anymore.

What I make of it is a dull and derivative sound fronted by a bloke without much of a voice who jumps around and beats his chest like he's coked up for no apparent reason. I do however appreciate that is an entirely subjective viewpoint.

A bit arrogant to suggest people think it's no good because they don't 'get' it, don't you think?

Strangely aggressive response, but thanks, and I will. smile

No problem mate, we all have them and I'm genuinely glad you enjoy it. That's the joy with music, always something for everyone to get passionate about.

As a perfect example, you should hear the utter crap my 13 year old daughter is currently listening to on MTV...

Dont get me started. It stretches the each to their own principle to near breaking, doesn't it?

It certainly does, but that's 'POP' music for you I suppose .

I bite my lip as I remember my dad saying exactly the same thing about my musical tastes at her age (Prodigy, Wonder Stuff, Inspiral Carpets etc.) In fact, I still think he was wrong. smile

I stopped listening to music for a few months recently, don't know why but this has happened before and usually it's because I'm working too hard or doing too much physical exercise and I just find myself listening to Radio 4 on the daily commute. Most of the time I don't even realise when this change happens and I just forget to put the music on.

I changed channels the other day when this song came on and I was absolutely captivated; such a joy to watch someone put their heart and soul into a performance. I watched it 3 times in a row.

None of it should work; the dad dancing, the overpowering earnestness, the guttural howls but it does and it is magnificent.

Drove home today with it blaring out of the car and I was singing along and looking like a complete plonker - and like Samuel T. Herring I did not give a ****

If you likedthem, look up their earlier project, "art lord and rhe self portraits". He's even more mental in that. Or his rap pseudonym "hemlock ernst".

A genuinely very talented and committed performer.

Just saw them on Jools Holland Later & I thought they were astonishing.

Even though the front man looks like Roberto Martinez doing a bizzare combo of Dad dancing combined with an impression of Felipe Massa on the Brazil 2008 podium.

As for the sound, they reminded me of the killers (when they were good)

I think I will have to get the new album.

I get the criticism of the lead singer but I do think he is sincere.
Anyway still not tiring of them.

I don't think it's at all sincere, judging by his other projects & studio footage. I think he's a well seasoned performer who's hit on a very good formula. Not saying it's not great to watch & I'm happy to contradict what I said earlier in this thread but it's an act. A very good one, but an act.

Aside from the fact he appears to be having some kind of fit that's 3 minutes of drab 80s throwback nothingness to me.

He's said it's a performance thing in interviews. The idea is to put on a show and tell a story, sometimes acting out roles to support it. Sometimes the crowd reaction sweeps him up and feeds the performance in return.

Forget the visual side of things and just listen to some of their music. Regardless of some bloke chest beating and prancing round a stage, just listening to Balance makes me want to dad-dance! It's not just about the singer anyway, there's depth to Future Islands in addition to and beyond Herring's persona.

As above, I'm with you mate. Having watched the other 2 videos I'm even more convinced he's just a berk with a huge ego and obvious cocaine habit...

We do appear to be in the minority though, not that I mind. smile

It's worth repeating, if his stage antics put yu off, listen to their studio album tracks. Tey have a very cool sound and he's far less outrageous.
