Maxwell murder by Rancid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE1zgrMdxBE

The bass solo from 1 min onwards is great.

Always loved the bassline to Pump it up by Elvis Costello (covered here by the wildhearts):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lGfiajRnVA

I love the constant rumbling of Black Sunshine by White Zombie. It's a brilliant bit of bass:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqPClltS5k8

Loved In The Meantime by Spacehog back in my Indie/Britrock days:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDkhl-CgETg

It's still a great song.

Also I Wish by Stevie Wonder. Or Sir Duke. I just love Stevie Wonder and his basslines are funky:

All great technical stuff but I do not find myself humming the riffs.

There's been some fantsatic links posted on this thread, I've really enjoyed listening to some stuff that I would never have found before.

I asked a mate down the pub (die hard Led Zep fan BTW) what he thought was the best bass line to a song he'd heard, imagine my surprise when he said The Jam, Town Called Mallice. It is rather good!

I've always liked the baseline on this,Talk Talk It's my life. The No Doubt cover version has an even heavier version of the same baseline too.

Most powerful would be 'Ace of Spades' fav would be Chris Squire and the track 'Does It Really Happen' off the Drama album 1980, I love driving to this track, and it still sounds like it was recorded yesterday, great album. Both Rickenbacker players too.

At last, read the whole thread and no mention of Chris Squire.

Chris is for me the greatest bass player on earth.

I'm a huge fan of Jamerson, Bernard and many, many more.

But for me the way Squire follows Andersons' wierd vocal range is nothing short of unique and astounding, he plays the bass from the perspective of the vocal score, being a former head choir-boy at Guildford cathedral, that is the secret to his unique style if you didn't know.

That and his Rickenbacker 'Harpsichord' bass.

If you're into Rickenbacker bass sounds try this for size:

And nobody mentioned Joe Osborne for 'Age of Aquarius' or the Carpenters 'For all we know' or Carole Kaye for Matt Munro 'We're gonna change the world'...

What about Jon Camp of Renaissance?

Not many people here know the truly monumental bass lines, I'm out.

I had a Ricky a few years back, is that you in the vid?
I have a Hayman 4040 that was used to jam and rough tape record with the late John Bonham.

too many to choose from from Wishbone Ash. Martin Turner is brilliant and so underrated and unrecognised. He plays bass like it was another guitar. he rarely pouinds out a 'time' rhythm, but plays under the other two guitarists

just some to be going on with
- Sometime world - middle section onwards
- FUBB
- Handy
- the pilgrim

etc etc

Handy

Everything the late and very missed Bernard Edwards played. Everybody Dance was a bass masterpiece, Good Times, I want your love, Le freak, all the Chic classics.

If we include synth bass lines I feel love by Donna Summer is still a dance classic.

Yes, but it always was a great riff.
I am still not sure of Wong the Corruptor's intention with this thread.
Are we talking great and memorable bass riffs here or complex and difficult performances which would be hard for the average bass player to replicate?
