I used to be obsessed with Stuart's playing (I suppose I always will be). I had two of those Kubicki Ex Factor basses, though I never did get one with a blue/black flip front paint like Stuart has there. I gather from what he was posting on Facebook the other day that he is recording a new album.

Here's one. Eric Clapton, the great Steve Gadd and Marcus Miller.

Not a bad combo.

Hard. So many over the years. Most 'popular' has to be John McVie on 'The Chain', especially for F1 PHrs.

Earlier McVie anchoring bass on many Fleetwood Mac records but for me, 'I'm so Afraid' and 'Oh Well, Pt 1 & Pt 2'.
Shows my age. I had hair and beard like Green and Buckingham in the 70s, not any more!

Here is a favourite of mine. Love the bass guitar in this 70s classic. Narada Michael Walden/TM Stevens.

It's funny you should post a link to The 4th Dimension group. I was just watching some of their videos the other day. Whilst I don't think it's the best stuff McLaughlin has ever done, they are a fearsome group and Etienne is a serious player. I was also quite surprised by the sound he gets of those F Basses, which I have always found to be quite soft sounding with a low output. I also think it's a little odd having the best drummer on the stage playing keyboards, but then Gary Husband is a wizard at both instruments.

Although I'm not a massive fan of Kai Eckhardt's music as a whole, he was absolutely incredible with John McLaughlin. I much prefer Jonas Hellborg's playing in general, but I've never heard a bassist really gel with McLaughlin like Kai did in the John McLaughlin trio in the late 80's. He also had an incredible sound coming from those headless Schack basses he was using at the time. Sadly, Schack basses have always been hard to find in the UK. Clover, another German bass manufacturer, also made a headless, carbon fibre laden headless bass around that time.

Anyway, John and Kai at their best...

Thanks, I'd forgotten about that one - lovely stuff!

Speaking of headless basses, I had a Hohner for a while - nice, compact and easy to carry around, but I didn't like it. The neck just felt too long, which sounds strange for someone accustomed to a Fender, but I kept on landing on the A fret when I was going for G - just felt wrong.

Rocco Prestia - Tower of Power.
Only so much oil in the ground
Check out his finger funk videos.

Often overlooked

Mark king - love games
John deacon - millionaires waltz
Bootsy Collins - for his 'on the one' feel

Was just rummaging through the cupboard and Little Ex found a box of old vinyl, we've pulled a few albums out for listening but this one really caught my eye and reminded me of this thread.

The bass over the whole album is ace. It's now playing at eleven! smile

Please enjoy!

Violent Femmes

You can all thank me later hehe

(Can't believe we missed this one!)

No one listened yet?

When you listen to this and some of their other stuff too and check out the dates and time lines, surely VF were one of the bands that seeded half of the Seattle grunge scene?

Nirvana anyone? Big Black? Mudhoney? NoMeansNo? Jesus Lizard?

If nothing else try the song 'prove my love' about 19:09 in that link.
