I liked the cover........

I used to do this in my early 20's, as a sort of way to discover new music. I haven't bought a vinyl album for nearly 20 years, but yesterday I popped into HMV with no intention of buying any vinyl, ended up spending half an our looking through a very limited number of records (guess about 50), many of them re-releases of old classic albums..... and now I own a Hercules & Love Affair - The Feast of the Broken Hearted.

No idea what genre it was..... resisted temptation to put it on the turntable when I got home..... then at 9pm... that magical moment of taking the vinyl out of the sleeve for the first time..... sat back with bottle of wine.... and wow it sounded great.

Loved the sound of Hercules & Love Affair.... not my normal stuff, but a good listen... and think I'll be trying more

as for the vinyl... it exceeded all my expectations... heavy weight stuff, no crackle (un like my +20 yrs old collection)... maybe this is going to relight my listening experience smile

Awesome post.

One of the things I'll never forget when growing up was thumbing through vinyl in the numerous record shops in the town centre (I can think of at least seven including the likes of Woolworths and WH Smith). Discovering an album with a special cover, regardless of whether or not you knew the band, was awesome.

Once you'd spent your money and invested in such a special thing I always thought the first listen was something to treasure. Without a doubt, listening to an album for the first time back then was a real experience. If you didn't like it on the first listen, you'd almost certainly keep trying. Now though, I just don't listen again, and find it much harder to find albums I truly love.

Sad really...

I can see the fun of the surprise with a new album. Despite being a young un', I can remember buying albums 'blind'. Albums like Dio's Holy Diver, I knew I liked Dio from Sabbath but had no idea what it would be like, so it was rather fun exploring something new. However, despite the fun of anticipation and surprise, I'd still rather live in the internet age to able to spotify and youtube a band or album to see if it was something I'd enjoy, rather than buy something and then feel like I needed to force myself to like it even when it wasn't my cup of tea.

I was exploring a lot of Prog stuff about 5 years ago, and the Gentle Giant Octopus looked so awesome to me, I would have bought that in a second just for the artwork in a store in 70s. Using spotify however, I found the album was really bad, I've tried listening to it about 3 -5 times, and apart from one or two riffs from one song, I just don't love it. I think the internet age has just accelerated to process of musical exploration, you can quickly see if you like a band, artist or album, leaving more time to spend exploring to find the stuff you really do love.

Tend to agree, Fantuzzi; funnily enough I downloaded the album the OP purchased and didn't like it at all - straight in the Recycle Bin and no worse off for it. I'll always pirate music first before buying as I dislike far more than I like. That, though, is the the beauty of it - I listen to far more than I ever would if I had to buy it all first and as a result, I love the 600 or so CDs I have on the wall and have been to see several artists live as a result (Jon Gomm is excellent live by the way...). It also seems that many albums have only a couple of great tracks on them and the rest are just filler. The creation of an album as a whole seems to be falling by the wayside as people tend more and more to only buy individual tracks that they like.

I wouldn't buy a car without a test drive and I wouldn't buy an album without a test listen.

I purchased a vinyl album a few weeks ago smile

But only because it was a rare album (only 1k pressed), by my favourite band. But best of all, it's signed by the band.

And all for £30. Chuffed is a major understatement bounce

Will be framing it.

You need to say which band!
