He's probably the kind of guy who 'if' he goes abroad on holiday immediately looks for the places that serve fish & chips and pizza?

I personally feel a little sorry for people with such a closed view as I always think they're missing out on so much good and interesting stuff. Each to their own I suppose.

Modern Country is fking awful though. smile

Yes, Hank Williams is what you need.

Love electro/dance music but HATE heavy DnB and happy fekkin hardcore.
Just don't feel the evil death type metal music, doesn't suit me.
Detest just about all current American 'black' music - think Jay-Z, Pitbull , Snoop......there is nothing of merit there either musically, lyrically or vocally, it's just so full of st, all about material wealth, shiny things, insulting someone, big arse titty girls and fking. Don't get me wrong, I'm not racist because (LOL!) I absolutely love Motown music, soul........

See, I love blues, trance, classical, rock, metal, and jazz yet without removing musical blinkers I'd not have found this a number of years ago:

I do listen to a lot of metal and I don't think that much of it, outside of the more mainstream stuff and then mainly nu metal which was a genre that had it's day over 15 years ago now, that there is a lot of angsty 'I hate my parents and want to KILL THE WOOOORLDDD!!!11111!!!!' stuff involved really. It's such a popular misconception though, I agree. There is a whole lot of other stuff that is very thoughtfully written and is skilfully played without ever going into the whole hackneyed 'look at me I can play my spiky dayglo guitar at over 2 trillion notes a second!' In fact I would add that metal as a genre can be much more diverse than people give it credit for. I also listen to a lot of hip hop, granted my bias is more towards 80s and 90s stuff before the bling set in. I also love a lot of the more trancey but not cheesy electronic stuff and I dabble in classical and the more gritty end of folk from time to time. I have warmed to quite a bit of the less up its own arse Indie stuff over the years as well. So although I'm broadly a metal fan I think I'm pretty open minded to most stuff as long as its not really twee pop or country and western. Oh and no James Blunt, EVER!!!!!

Why do so many people seem to only enjoy music from a certain genre and completely dismiss anything outside of that genre?
Appreciate that people have different tastes, and I wouldn't expect everyone to like all types of music, but generally in my experience the type of people who refuse to listen to other genres, or dismiss other music, generally have "issues" or are a bit "precious". Sometimes it's just like they have never grown up from their teenage years when they thought it was cool to like a certain type of band.

I'm perfectly happy to listen to any music, if I like it I like it. Couldn't care less if it is One Direction, classical, country etc.

Interesting thread, I try to keep my mind open when it comes to new music but I can't see myself ever listening to rap music.

Personal preference really, I obviously very much enjoy the music that I listen to but I am sure there are others that can't stand it.

4 pages, and the nail is hammered. That's all there is to it, the rest is just an attempt to justify one's own taste in music.

There's some talent to be found in rap. I can happily listen to Eminem or Dre or DMX and then NWA or Public Enemy, and then there's the politically charged stuff like Immortal Technique (listen closely to the story told in Dance With The Devil, brutal) or Dead Prez, or the funny light hearted stuff DJ Format does with Abdominal (great rhythm). Or you could just as easily catch me listening to some Dream Theater or Tool or Joe Satriani or Gary Moore or Walter Trout or Opeth or Jake Bugg or Taylor Swift or The Prodigy or Sash! or Led Zeppelin or Aphex Twin or Jack White or Jim Croce or Elgar or Holst or John Coltrane or Tom Jones or Sigur Rós or Lorde... there is something good in almost any genre. Except maybe drone metal...

Hip hop's beats and samples helped me expand my horizons. The best era was the 80s and early 90s.

Funk, soul, jazz, rock, electro, disco, punk-funk, afro-beat...

Hip hop has no boundaries, only ignorant think it does.

There's very few genres I can't find something I enjoy in. Sometimes it will be the more popular side of a genre I prefer and others it'll be the more underground. Middle of the road Indie/Rock I probably struggle with the most.

I am however, probably the opposite of those who say 'I like everything', or even worse, 'I like all music aslong as it's good', as others have mentioned previously. I find it difficult to understand those who just don't have an interest in music, or flatly ignore genres. Often those who just like the typical flavour of the month artist and overplay an album for a couple of weeks, to then throw it on the pile with the rest to never play again.

I listen to most stuff really.

My favourite is house, a bit progressive, a bit techy, but always nice and sassy.

My worst is also house, the cheesy US "EDM" stuff, or the horrid 140bpm noise.

Yesterday I listened to Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now album, Diana Krall, Tony Bennett, China Crisis and some new band who I can't remember the name of.

Today I have listened to John Digweed and Nick Muir's soundtrack album of John Twelve Hawkes The Traveller, which is stunning, Craig Armstrong, Lloyd Cole and now got Einaudi playing.

Rock and Metal is about the only thing I don't listen to, but there are a few good tracks out there from that Genre.

Oh, and bagpipes, I can say that I don't mind being narrow minded about that sort of noise, horrid sound.

That's a brilliant song. One of the most listened to on my mp3 player even though it's not really my type of music and I have nothing else by the artist smile

Thinking about my taste in music brings to mind what a friend of mine once said. He changes his cars like other guys change their socks and in the last 20 years has owned everything imaginable. Anyway he'd just sold one and was agonising bout what to buy next. All my suggestions were met with either "already had one of those, want something different" or "don't like them."

Then he said: "The trouble with me is, I like cars, but I don't like many cars."

Well I'm the same. I like music, but I don't like much music.

Let's be honest; most pop music is born not out of an urge to produce a work of artistic merit, more from a desire to make money and/or become famous. There's no law that says anyone has to like all of it, or any of it.

So why shouldn't I like one or two things and hate the rest if I want to? (By the way, I do.)

I just wish most radio stations didnt play thesame stuff over & over
Some interesting responses in this thread, but this particulary struck a nerve.I drive for a living and have taken to listening to almost any radio station which has more talking than it does music.Despite liking much of the music, I am also not a lover of the OTT presenting styles of many stations and I find my own choice of music starts to lose its appeal over the course of a year!

There regularly seems to be a dozen or so songs filling the airwaves almost constantly for a month or two and then the cycle repeats. At times like this, I find myself punching the air when something as trashy as 'save all your kisses for me' emanates from my speakers and I look apon it as a bold and refreshing move by whichever station I happen to be listening to hehe

I get 'Drop dead gorgeous' by Republica at least once a day on Jack.fm in Bristol. Never worked out why they love it sooo much.

There was an exclamation mark.
Although those forms of music are not top of my playlist I do give them a chance in the classroom. I also transcribe a lot of current pop music for my students to rehearse and perform.
