ks.I wanted to see Imelda May this year and she only had a few dates. I plumped for The Corn exchange in Cambridge (face value £34.50) but of course "No tickets available". I really wanted to see her so bit the bullet and paid 204 quid for 2 tickets from Eventime. Too far away to do in a night so booked a hotel as well. The seats were very good but the sound was crap, haven't been to that venue before so maybe it was just a bad night but pretty much a waste of money.
By the time the gig was due (last Saturday) she had added more dates, I picked up 2 tickets for tonight at The Cliffs Pavilion in Southend for 68 quid, the Cliffs is a 15 minute drive from my house.
Live and learn.

Better half likes Whitesnake. They're in Manchester at Christmas on the bill with Def Leppard. Face value is £45, they went on sale last weekend.
2 tickets cost me £200. All the decent tickets have already been bought and are being resold on the original vendor's, youknowwho, sister websites.

It is when you consider that for a recent fans only gig at the Manchester Academy, Muse, used a credit card only system.
Where you bought the tickets as usual online with your card, then they never actually send you anything but instead you collect the ticket on the night from the box office once they process the card you paid with. Not a completely infallible system but its a step in the right direction.
Now obviously this is on a much smaller scale (2000 seats?) but at the MEN Arena, for example, you have your tickets scanned before you go in so why can't your card be scanned in the same way? To save the problem of finding your seats you could be sent a sort of dummy ticket that has seat numbers on, but you'd only gain entry once your card has been verified and linked to your dummy ticket.
Would it take that much longer?

The problem is how you distinguish between genuine fans and touts. Also people do buy tickets and are then genuinely unable to go, requiring them to try and sell on. What you suggest is pretty much exactly what Radiohead did when they played the o2.
