First full album I bought was 'Countdown To Ecstasy', which I though was great. I recently bought 'Pretzel Logic' which, after I'd heard so much good things about it, doesn't seem nearly as interesting by comparison.
It would be a sad old place if we all liked the same thing, that's why it is difficult to recommended songs/tracks/albums, maybe "the best of" suggestion may be the way for the op to go.
I agree about Pretzel Logic, my least favourite album of theirs.

Have to mention respect to the late great Roger Nichols on here, another piece in the great Steely Dan jigsaw.

My favourite album ever.

As an album to start off with I'd recommend Can't Buy A Thrill, start at the beginning and what an album it is.

I don't think Can't Buy A Thrill has been released in anything other than 16bit just yet, but there's a good deal on Qobuz for Donald Fagen's Trilogy 5 disc set in 24 bit:

I'd heard of Steely Dan,and a few of their songs, but I happened on a classic albums programme on the tv and it was Aja - I was hooked, I love it, and am about to start into their other stuff.

\not bad for a band named after a vibrator!!!

Kings, Brooklyn, Only a Fool plus many more great, great songs.

I'd love to see them live some time.

I've heard of an album that comprises a collection of demo type stuff for some of their songs - does anyone know what this is called.

Hard to choose a favourite Steely Dan album, possibly Royal Scam, it certainly has some of the best guitar work. I'm a fan thanks to my Dad playing them in the car when we were kids

Larry Carlton is all over that record and more involved hence the emphasis.
This album was in my car when my daughter was born. All those late night trips to and from the hospital started with Kid Charlemagne!

Its been a long time now, but I loved Steely Dan ,not just for the music but for the perfect production and engineering. Each track was impeccable. In the old LP days, a Steely Dan Album on a good sound system was just sublime.

Thread resurrection.

Recently found out that it had been re-released on 180g vinyl so I duly ordered myself a copy.

The sound is great compared to my limited edition copy and an original I have.
