Excellent example, arguably the best song writer that has ever lived, he managed a few good ones in the Wings era, after that, nothing much.

The Wonderstuff did the same after 8 legged groove machine and HUP - Never Loved Elvis was commercialised for the masses (some might call it selling out biggrin)
Oh yes indeed, I really liked the first two then it just seemed to go very wrong.

Can't argue with that. They are still doing the rounds but I won't go to see them. I did go a couple of years ago but that was becuase it was the "HUP" tour and not a mix finishing with size of a cow!

I'm guessing you probably mean their third and fourth albums.

Nobody bought their first two albums.
Guess again.

Its just nature. Bands have years and years to get the ideas and themes for the first couple of albums, then its 1 a year or so and not many can be so creative. Add this to the fact that musicians need to eat/have somewhere to live and the general mellowing as we age, music loses the edge of young men.

I commented about the last Elbow album that A happy Guy Garvey isn't good for the albums.

The Gallagher brothers should give up.
I thought Noel's solo album was better than anything Oasis had released for years. He'd be mad to go back to Oasis.

Me too, before the masses caught up. The Reindeer Section is also worth a listen and, IMHO, better than SP's later stuff.

Whatever the reason, Elbow's later stuff isn't a patch on the early albums. Personally, I think GG is a bit up his own arris now.

My favourite Manchester scene band from the 90's, the Inspiral Carpets have released a new album this month. I heard a few tracks thought that although their style is exactly the same, it was pretty poor. It's not the 90's anymore and they are not in their 20's anymore. Some bands who are always around evolve over time, the ones that disappear and come back 20 years later, often try to pick up exactly where they left off. Often without the magic or mood from their time.
Same as the Roses. The Second Coming took too long, missed their niche and was pretty naff IMO

The Mondays should have stopped after 24 hour party people. Pills and thrills was commercial chart rubbish without their earlier rawness (Think Step On compared to Hallelujah)

The Wonderstuff did the same after 8 legged groove machine and HUP - Never Loved Elvis was commercialised for the masses (some might call it selling out biggrin)

More up to date, I loved the Arctic Monkeys first 2 albums but though that their 3rd was poor. However they seem to have returned to form

Agree with the Gallaghers though - just give it up. I never really even liked Oasis tbh
Totally agree with the Stone roses comments, Second coming was awful.

I'm not having the Mondays though, Bummed (you are writing off Wrote for Luck !?) and Pill N Thrills are both great albums, the last one they did (cant remember the name now - that's bad)

My nomination - Paul Weller should have packed it in after Stanley Road

The fact that when you were in your twenties you were good at churning out music for teenagers doesn't mean that you will necessarily still be able to write new music for that cohort when you are in your fifties. Some songwriters grow with their audience, others don't.

I could forgive quite a lot for Starfighter pilot and last lone gunman. I bough Fallen empires for a couple of quid a while ago, not listened to it yet.

Will check Reindeer Section out.

Re. Rush. I really liked Counterparts and Snakes and arrows. In fact i am listening to Snakes and arrows right now.

Can I also Give an honourable mention to Yes.

Have you heard their more recent stuff? There's some great songwriting on Escape from Rubbish Island in particular, And even NLE had some good stuff if you looked past Size of a Cow and Cheap Seats.

interesting thread - I read a month or 2 back that someone considered himself a fan of the music rather than the group, I think that this thread does bear out that opinion.

I'll second that.

Also; RHCP, I think By The Way was the last decent thing they did.

Black Stone Cherry. Two (slightly) stand out songs on their latest album, but as all the tracks sound the same it's really splitting hairs to honestly claim any stand out. The band is basically Creed-lite, but without any of the talent (again - subjective). TBH the band really should go their separate ways and try again.

Unfortunately I've got tickets for Manchester on Friday as Big Sue likes them. She doesn't know it yet, but we won't be staying for any encore. An Indian in Rusholme beckons.
