Yes whenever I see him pop on question Time and the like, pontificating on everything in sight, I feel like chucking a brick at the telly. Bloody man should stick to what he's good at.

First, of course, he needs to find something he's good at.
I think the person referred to is as full of st as an overladen septic tank, but in my opinion he has written some truly outstanding songs.
I'll be honest here and say I love (among a handful of other tunes)

Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year's Day
Gloria

problem is thought that if I had to choose whether to shoot him, russell brand or morrisey I'd be in a right pickle

Russell Brand I would sooner punch to death, though. He's one of those people that if I saw him, I would have to attack him, and, having started, wouldn't be able to stop.

At least the other two have actually achieved something, even though their stuff divides opinions. All that RB has achieved is to put me back in the Guinness Book of Records under human achievements in the 'loathing of celebrities' section.

I can't believe people on here are disrespecting Stone Roses Second Coming. One of the best albums of all time in my opinion (certainly in my top ten)
Half good half bad. Begging You is absolutely genius that U2 ripped them off with Discotheque!

The problems around that time are well documented. If only they did a baggy album with Fools Gold etc....

To be able to create album after album which is as good or better than what went before is impossible. Most bands have that period of creative genius where they live for the moment, attract the fans and those songs remain in the consciousness. After that it is ususally a slow death / slippery slope where the new material is just not up to it. If you look at bands like the Rolling Stones, Depeche Mode (sad to say), ACDC, ZZ Top and other long running acts - a new album is just the signal that they are going on tour again to play all the old songs you want to hear. Very little new material is played. There is more money in touring these days.

Foo Fighters too. Controversial perhaps, but the last few albums have done nothing for me. Middle of the road rock. Whereas some of the other stuff Grohl's done recently, Sound City, Crooked Vultures, even as far back as Probot and drumming for the Queens, is for me, a much better use of his talent/time.
I agree. They have tried to do something different creatively with this 'Sonic Highways' and associated TV series, but the end result isn't really any different! Last I thought was any good was probably In Your Honor, getting on for 10 years ago now. Yet the middle of the road formula is evidently working for them commercially, I'd say they are as big as ever - just not very interesting.

Saw them live last week. They weren't brilliant.

Sounds like there has been a few lacklustre performances on this tour, and lots of mid paced songs. Big goodbyes by the sound of it as well. I think we'll see a few festival shows next year and that'll be it. The Rock'n'Roll lifestyle has caught up with him now, no more smoking, pacemakers and cut back on the drinking. Lemmy is a legend, but I don't want to see him not giving 100%. It's always been all or nothing...

Metallica. The Black Album was their last decent offering IMO.

Master of Puppets was a masterpiece.
Yes. Me and mates listened to this on loop to and from Donnington the year they played there just after the album was released. Has a special place in my heart as a reminder of a great weekend and they've not bettered it since.

Same for Slayer, I enjoyed God Hates Us All and Christ Illusion, but nothing since. I guess they have no choice anyway sadly. RIP Jeff.

Surely Cold Play should get a mention here.
One album in your collection and it's job done!
Because when they bring out something new it sounds exactly the same as everything they've ever done before!

Rush
Rush have been being told they should pack in for years. In fact, every era they have, they're told to give up as they'll never top their last. When they started doing prog rock concept stuff like 2112, they were probably told to stick with their Led Zeppelin-esque first album sound. When they moved onto polished prog rock in tighter song structures with things like Moving Pictures, people probably said they should have quit whilst they were ahead. Then when they started getting into electronic sounds in the 80's, most of their old fans grumbled and loads of new fans listened...

...who were probably put off when the bleak sound of Grace Under Pressure turned into the towering, glorious Power Windows and Hold Your Fire...

Where they really seemed to lose their stride was 1993, mainly because they wanted to trim back their sound and follow the emerging trend for alt rock and grunge rock. They still did a few good tunes but they were becoming few and far between on Counterparts and Test For Echo (both had their masterpieces though). Then it all seemed to fall apart and it looked like Rush may have been over, so they came back fighting with Vapor Trails and expanded on that over the next decade, to where we are today...

They're still full of passion for their music, which is important. They don't make, and have never made 'bad' music (aside from their dire first album, which sounds as bad as Led Zeppelin). However, things did go downhill for them when they decided they wanted to write riffs instead of songs, as they stopped using such innovative song structures and things became much predictable (even when they pared down the song length for Signals and onwards, they still had a lot of bridges, time changes and such). From Counterparts onwards, you can pretty much tell how good a Rush song will be from the first ten seconds; if the riff isn't a neck-snapper it's probably not going to be a great song. Similarly, Geddy's singing is less of a focus and the creativity of his old basslines suffered massively when he started using the flamenco technique, as he stopped writing his incredible signature fills and just raking one note repeatedly for the fill.

Just listen to them play a 'prime era' song live though, they've still got it!

I saw them last year at the O2, and they were absolutely astounding. One of the best live gigs I've been to (and I've done thousands over the years) smile
