You need to get him into a shop to try some. He may really like your 80's strat, but maybe if you have given him a les paul, or a Rickenbacker or something else then he would really like that.

I know on the rare occasion where I have bought a new guitar I have tried many (even of the same model) before finally finding one I just seemed to like that bit more.

If you buy him something then I'm sure it will be great and he will be thrilled.However I'm sure that if his wife gives him £1500 in cash on the day, drives the pair of you to Denmark St or Guitar Guitar or somewhere, with strict instructions not to come home until he has spent it on a guitar then he will end up with something he really, really wants.
I think she should just put them both in the car and drive to the preferred shop and hand hubby the wad and say don't come home until you have the guitar of your dreams.

If she gives him the cash first he may start dreaming motorbikes or a couple of new fishing rods

Couple of other thoughts here:

Patrick Eggle New York - British take on a Strat

PRS - lots to chose from in your price range - the 305 model has single coils, if that is a must and you can get a maple neck version if that floats your boat

Personally I love the JV's too - (nice one for sale on EBay at the moment) but all the suggestions will all look and feel very different - try them and see which one(s) you like!

The guitar he should buy is the one he likes the best. So often these threads end up being another way of saying: The guitar THAT I LIKE is...

£1500 is far too much anyway, just for a guitar. Now if it was guitar, amp and some effects that would be different.

Of course there are ways to spend £1500 or more on a guitar and there will be plenty of manufacturers happy to relieve people of that kind of money, but never was the laws of diminishing returns more clearly illustrated than in the guitar market.

I do agree. Musical instruments generally are sold at cachet prices especially in high street retail establishments. Remarkable bargains about once you get past that barrier. I have an old Levin Acoustic jumbo (1963) which has been fully restored but kept looking original over the years. Daft money on the net now: nice guitar but only worth about half the advertised prices on the net, if that in fact. £1500 should get a very, very nice guitar and I wish the buyer well. Huge enjoyment in owning a guitar you really want.

the amount of money spent is a personal choice;
some would say it's too much for just a guitar, others would say it's not...

How about here ?

I picked up an Eric Clapton Sig strat from here not so long back - prices to beat anyone;
and great service.

the guitar is perfect too.

Of course there are some who would say it's not, they could hardly justify their having paid more if they didn't. The point I am making is that the extra money is not rewarded by extra value. A £1,500 guitar is not twice as good as a decent £750 guitar. It might be twice as desirable, but that's not quite the same thing.
