Songs that make you cry

Dance with my father again - Luther Vandross
This always gets me a little bit, really nice song. They don't really make me cry but certainly emotional songs that make me feel a bit morose!:
Bruce Springsteen - The River (depressing story)
Eric Clapton - Tears in heaven (sad to know why he wrote it)
Jackson Browne - Here come those tears
Dixie Chicks - Travellin Soldier (lyrics make me sad)
Elliot Smith - Twilight
Used to have a playlist of sad/depressing songs but not sure what happened to it. Guess I was more miserable back then!
If you ever get dumped, don't drink half a bottle of scotch and play this song.

A few spring to mind.
Wise Up - Aimee Mann.
Very simple song. But heart-breaking.
The choices we make, how they go wrong, why we can't fix them even when other people are begging us too.
(Interesting truetoadfact: The song was originally thrown away on the Jerry McGuire soundtrack where only the piano riff was featured before it formed such a pivotal role in Magnolia with all the other Aimee Mann songs.)
Old & Wise - The Alan Parsons Project.
Nothing to do with space lasers, plenty to do with growing old and reflecting on your life.
The Long & Winding Road - The Beatles.
That catch in Pauls voice on the first line always gets me, a song about the people who always be in your life. Amazing to think that this magically tune could be conjured up from the mess that band had become. By far their best work.
That's Me Trying - William Shatner.
I will not hear a word said against this. As a portrait of a total fk up it cannot be beaten. He didn't mean to be, he just is. Things have gone too far and they can't come back. He just wants to have a normal relationship with his daughter, he's clearly intelligent but it's all just slipping through his fingers & has been for years. My depth of experience couldn't even begin to understand how a family could have gone so badly wrong. But it cuts me to the quick.
Did I say daughter?
"Do you still see your sister Emily? Bring her too?"
What a line.
The winner is...
New York Minute - Don Henley.
We're all doomed.
We're all going to die alone.
No one is truly happy.
It can all vanish in an instant.
I can't understand for the life of me when this record is played on 9/11 every year by my local radio station as some kind of celebration of New York. This record paints a picture of a city that will basically spit you out rather than chew you up. Again the catch in Henleys voice as he says one of the greatest and saddest lyrics in popular music gets me every single time.
Pulled my coat around my shoulders, took a walk down through the park.
The leaves were falling around me, groaning city in the gathering dark,
On some solitary rock, a desperate lover left his mark,
"Baby I've changed, Please come back,"
Even typing that makes me feel blue.

Don't mean to be rude but from what I've gathered most posters here have been dumped their girlfriends?
You'll find a lot of songs, for whatever reason, are based around relationships. My example wasn't the case. It was more of a 'why didn't I do something about it when we clearly had a chance to start something' type scenario. Serves me right for being too stupid / drunk
Chocolate Genius - My Mom
All about losing his mother to dementia, on that cheery note, here it is

I would argue that when you get dumped by a girlfriend, certain songs make you feel sad when you hear them for awhile but then just like the girl you get over it and can listen to them again. With me Romeo & Juliet and I Want To Know What Love Is being two prime examples. Now they don't upset me at all, a wry smile is all they get.In my case the songs that make me well up the most are about your whole life; your family, your friends, the mistakes you might have made.
Songs that make you reflect on your time.

Not since I was a teenager My initial list was tracks that make me misty-eyed for no good reason... No particular personal experience attached to them, no memories or breakups.
Some tracks make me emotional because they remind me of a time or person that has slipped away into the past. The Eurythmics 'I need you' is this. I used to listen to the album on my Walkman on the bus to college, and it reminds me of an emotionally complicated period of my life.
Luther Vandross "Dance with my father" is an odd one as my father isn't dead yet, and I can't stand most of Vandross' music, but it makes me think of how I will have to deal with my parents (and ultimately my) mortality.
For me, it's the last track on Rendez-Vous (Ron's Piece) - It always causes the dust in the room to rise when I think about how it was supposed to include a saxaphone section by Ron McNair while onboard the Challenger which would have been the first piece of music recorded in outer space, but ended up being recorded on Earth and being dedicated to Ron and the rest of the crew of Challenger instead.

Good shout. I'd forgotten that one. Might have to dig out my old JMJ cassette...Just realised I've got nothing to play it on now though
For me one that's always done it is the aforementioned Living Years by Mike & The Mechanics. An odd one for my next choice some might think but my reading for my grandfathers funeral was the lyrics from: Neurosis - A Sun That Never Sets and the song is amazing (and reasonably mellow for Neurosis). Also Pearl Jam - Black can get me if I'm in the right mood. Another one that gives me goose bumps and can also move me almost to tears is Tool - Wings For Marie/10,000 days, especially as the songs are a tribute to the lead singer, Maynard James Keenan's mother.

Jane's Addiction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Uj4Q4zbtfM a song Perry Pharrell wrote after he learned of his friend Xiola's sudden death of a heroin overdose.
It also has a lot to do with Perry's mother, who killed herself when Perry was very young.

Will you say hello to my ma?
Will you pay a visit to her?
She was an artist, just as you were.
I'd have introduced you to her.
She would take me out on Sundays.
We'd go laughing through the garbage.
She repaired legs like a doctor
On the kitchen chairs we sat on.
She was unhappy, just as you were.
Unhappy, just as you were.
Unhappy, just as you were.
Unhappy, just as you were...
Will you pay a visit to her?
She was an artist, just as you were.
I'd have introduced you to her.
She would take me out on Sundays.
We'd go laughing through the garbage.
She repaired legs like a doctor
On the kitchen chairs we sat on.

Unhappy, just as you were.
Unhappy, just as you were...
