Aside from it being the Buzz Acronym of choice, I've recently rediscovered my taste for Electronic music, having spent the 5-10 years being into mainly instrument based music (which I still enjoy, of course), with a little bit of dub-step here and there for good measure!

Based on this, who is worth listening to these days? I've gotten into music by Madeon, M4sonic, Sub Focus, Galantis plus of course all of the old trance from the late 90's / early 2000's.

Ta very much.

I despise that term. It's like calling anything else Non-Electronic Music. Does EDM include ragga? Deep house? Uplifting trance? So which of the many types of music using electrickery do you prefer?

Pedantry at its finest. Baring in mind I wrote that post at silly o'clock in the morning, give me a little leeway eh?

To answer your question, house, trance, dubstep mainly, but part of the purpose of this post is to find out about genres I may not have listened to before.

It's not pedantic. EDM is an American term that covers too broad a selection of music.

I'd explore the variations of trance - prog, uplifting, psy. There's variations of house, too, eg deep house, deep tech, tech house. And for a more chilled out, there's psychill, ambient, etc. Check out di.fm and see what you fancy.

Yeah, to be fair to Huffy the genre is massive, and covers everything from much of the pop music you hear on the radio to the depths of psy-trance, deep house and experimental.

Personally I love the trance side. Hands in the air big room choones with good breakdowns and generally a nice vocal.

Sunlounger
Dash Berlin
Gareth Emery
Armin van Buuren

And also like the more chilled out house music, which I tend to follow youtube channels for;

The Sound You Need https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCudKvbd6gvbm5UCYR...
La Bella Musique https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXKr4vbqJkg4cXmdv...
Majestic Casual https://www.youtube.com/user/majesticcasual
Mr Deep Sense https://www.youtube.com/user/MrDeepSense
Electro Posse https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpO0OSNAFLRUpGrNz...

But as said above, there are hundreds of genres, you can go as hard or soft as you like. You can get grimy and rough, or smooth and silky. Its just a case of exploring what interests you.

I agree with Hoofy

I have been a House DJ for quite a few years, and dabbled in House production, and I hate absolutely hate the term.

It's a term made up by the 'Jersey Shore' type Douchbags in the US who enjoy rubbish by the Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta and suchlike.

"EDM". Translation - mainstream Yanks discover house music and drugs 20 years after everyone else and then make a really stty job of iT.

If you want to listen to proper "electronic dance music" by Americans who got it right first time when it was actually cool then go download some

Jeff Mills - still the daddy - one of the greatest house records ever made - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRbqmb2ul2A

Robert Hood - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnSnmBWjSN4
Carl Craig - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb2MxexQ-aw (mix)
Juan Atikins - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv24xpbzo5g - 1983 FFS!!
Underground Resistance - the original detroit badboys - this one is just superb - a remix of the already devastating Seawolf track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpIt7sUKIfs
Joey Beltram - nothing else to say except - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALsHox5sYCk
Green Velvet - recent remix of his classic by Jamie Jones - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq1UVpVgHmA
DJ Pierre - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCUPc9zVfyo (the track that started everything)

Since life got busy about 10yrs ago I've well and truly lost track of proper house & techno music, however I did manage to listen to some of the CLR podcasts a while ago and many of them were pretty bloody good.

A while back plenty of UK artists were regularly churning out decent music. Have a look for stuff by Surgeon, James Ruskin, Regis, Female, etc. Also some of the harder, darker stuff that developed out for the mid-90s London based acid-techno scene was pretty bloody amazing. Artists like any of the Liberators, Lawrie Immersion, Guy McGaffer, Dave the Drummer, DDR, etc, are well worth a listen.

If you like big cheesy breakdowns, hoover noises and big sweaty directors all dancing around shirtless then some of the stuff that used to be released on Tinrib will be up your street.

It's all about the hardcore. Oldskool English jungle, Rotterdam gabber, Scottish bouncy techno. Throw in a bit of Spanish makina to cheese it up.

Genuine laugh out loud at that because it's true biggrin

I've been to Vegas twice now and both times have attempted a few of the 'big clubs' such as 1OAK and XS, only to find them absolutely terrible and filled with utter, utter fist pumping wkers, while the DJ plays crap by the Swedish House Mafia.

The door staff treat you like absolute st and basically look you up and down and decide if they 'will allow you in', the drinks are stupid prices, the only way you get any kind of respect or service from the staff whatsoever, and in some cases to even just get in, you have to 'buy bottle service' which is where you have to pay up about $700 between about 6 of you and then get given 2 st bottles of champagne and 2 st bottles of vodka and a 'private VIP table' where you will proceed to sit there feeling like a complete wker while the staff push everyone else away who just wants to sit and talk to you.

All the girls who show any interest at all turn out to be hookers, and the rest are just after free bottles of champagne to be bought for them by people sitting in the VIP areas, because "they're worth it don't you know?", you wont't even get their phone number of course, just buy them drinks all night.

You will then realise after about 2 hours, that no one is really having any fun at all, and you all leave about $1000 down from when you came in.

But hey, at least Steve Aoki was DJ'ng right? rolleyes

Same in Miami when I went to Liv.

That has been my experience of the 'Big EDM clubs' in Vegas/Miami, but don't worry, we bombed all those places off in favour of places that all the locals go to such as "Stoneys', Commonwealth, 'Insert Coin' and had an absolutely brilliant time smile

The only place in the US which hasn't really turned out wk for club nights out is NYC, which as one of the original pioneer cities of House music along with Chicago still keeps it real thank fk!

I wonder how many of those Vegas dillweeds actually realise that Chicago was doing this all much, much better nearly THIRTY years ago - and what they would make of a proper night of Ron Trent, DJ Pierre, Steve Poindexter, Frankie Knuckles and Maurice Joshua rather than pricks like Guetta

The thing is what was dance music since disco died and that disco wasn't mainly electronic?
