How come I'm not hearing this anymore? Used to be one of the most played Xmas songs, everybody loves it, is it because of the word "faggot"?

Watched a really interesting doc about it last year. Apparently they had it written for years but couldn't find the right voice for kirstys part, until kirsty arrived !

I caught a bit of Scott Mills show yesterday and they had someone teaching them how to sing this song phonetically to sound like Shane. Basically, she got them to sign 'nasally' and changed the words so that when they sang them it sound like the way he pronounced them. I thought it was quite funny myself.

I've heard it a few times this year already, not that I mind it but I won't put it on to listen to at home.

We were working on the Justin Guitar version for our gig last Saturday, but unfortunately our female guest vocalist was taken ill. probably the least annoying Christmas song of the lot.

Step in to Christmas by Sir Elton John. Being a fan, i love it when he raises his Watford FC season ticket halfway through the vid.

Heard loads, every time I've been shopping it's come on.

Fountains of Wayne's 'Alien for Christmas' is the best song anyway and that hardly ever gets played.

Shane McGowan is full of st, in my humble opinion, and FoNY is a terrible song. It amazes me that anyone likes it, but they do so maybe they can hear something I can't?

I remember hearing there was supposed to be someone else singing it, and Kirsty M only filled in so the Pogues could record their part, and her involvement was because she was married to the producer of the track. In checking out who he was (Steve Lillywhite) it turns out there's a bit more history to it than that, and the bit about someone else specific singing it was not quite true. Though it seems there's some disagreement about what the exact history of the song is.

Last year there was a thing where Radio 1 were doing a Norman Collier over the word "faggot" until a lot of people got in touch to complain about it, rightly pointing out it had been played for years with that word in it and no-one cared. Then they did an about-turn and played it properly again.

I thought it was just me.

I don't find a song about 2 drunks slagging each other off Christmassy (sp) at all.

Your experience of Christmas gatherings must be different from mine.

I know nothing really about Shane, but I love FoNY, I think it's great song, and Kirsty MacColl's contribution is what makes it special for me, but as always all opinions regarding music are wholly subjective smile

How much do you think one of these 'classic' Christmas hits that gets played every year earns them in royalties? Is Jona Lewie really well off for example?!
