Another lesson in attention to detail; this time for chord voicings, wide intervals, and guitar tone. Technically excellent as well :

Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
Yes, an absolutely superb piece of music, Eric is one of the true greats, he's forgotten more about guitar playing than most guitarists will ever learn.

This is my favourite Cliffs of Dover performance, the chords at 04:38 are incredible.

I've always been an Eric Johnson fan and Cliffs Of Dover is just a beautiful piece of music and the tone he has is just fantastic. He always seems to play that same battered tobacco burst Strat in every clip I've ever seen as well. None of this changing guitar for every song that you see from so many bands.

For me I never heard better than Peter Green. The green manalishi, supernatural, rattlesnake shake are just pure and utter magic. One day I chanced upon a cover he does called 'I've got a mind to give up living' which you can find on YouTube, it's just mind blowing. Such a shame he suffered so much with his mental health as he got older which stunted his playing. Awesome awesome talent.

Some of my fave guitarists...

David Gilmore (Pink Floyd)
Paul Kossoff (Free)
Duane Dennison (The Jesus Lizard)
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden)
Buddy Guy (Paved the way for Hendrix, Page, Clapton etc)

I love these guys because they were/are innovators in the music i love, each with their own distinct sound and style that no one else could replicate.

Cant really stand any of the guitaristy tech sort of guys (Vai, Malmstein, Goven) i can appretiate the technical ability but its bloody boring.

It wasn't really his age that got him, it was the drugs and the hanging out with the 'German Jet Set'

Still a shame though, and I echo your other sentiments, he was a genius.

Santana is my favourite of all, he plays with a lot of feeling and rhythm.

Seen him live 3 times (that's all unfortunately)

Seen a lot of great guitarists in my time and quite a lot of them have been mentioned here but the one that stands out for me is Steve Howe from Yes.

So many great guitarists to choose from. I'm gonna put forward the relatively unknown Keith More. First heard of him at a drum clinic by Mark Mondesir, who played on his Guitar Stories album (a CD of which I used to own but left it in the workshop of a previous employer some 10 years ago!).

The album is pretty multi-faceted as it covers distinctly different genres but all are pretty spot on, which shows how versatile Keith is. You can tell that he has a pretty solid foundation in jazz though as it's evident all the way through, and the other musicians are all of equally high quality.

Jazz example
Rock example
Blues example

I'm not aware of any other albums by him, nor if he's even still playing professionally (which would be a shame if he isn't); I think he now runs a studio in London.

This is my favourite Eric Johnson tune:

That section at 01:20 is just unreal. What a break. And the outro solo just rips the roof off!

Some more classical stuff :

Dinnigan plays Granada by Isaac Albeniz. Again, Simon plays with such delicacy and touch, the tone of the guitar just seems more delicious.

Asturias by Albeniz played by the very lovely Ana Vidovic

I listen to this all the time:

Very talented player, and a lovely Manne guitar (you don't see many of those). Some of the licks don't strike me as very 'Holdsworth-y', despite the common intervals and symmetrical shapes which Holdsworth favours. Some of them are spot on for an Allan impression though.

The one and only Metal Mickey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypYkkDwJBxw (solo at about 3:50)

Instantly recognisable melodic choice of notes and phrasing.

And I can't believe that none of you guys have mentioned Randy Rhoads. So many to choose from, but Mr Corwley does it for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YagUPjF-E0k (solo from 2:00) Wonder where he would have taken his talent if he wasn't caught up in that stupid rock-n-roll stunt. frown

is that an unreleased track then? Never heard of that one before tongue out

But I do agree that Randy is the man. It's really really sad he's not about. But in a similar vein, Bernie Torme, who stood in for Randy after that tragic accident is just as awesome. And a top top bloke too thumbup

By way of apology, I offer this small token of properly awesome (back when awesome meant something) guitar playing from Al and Paco: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhccIfevjCU
