By way of apology, I offer this small token of properly awesome (back when awesome meant something) guitar playing from Al and Paco: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhccIfevjCU
This version is even better:

The pace is incredible, it's real 'day at the races' stuff, but the playing is top notch.

I don't think we've had some SRV on here yet.

So :-

Texas Flood Live '83

This, I believe, was when Stevie was up to his neck in drugs and his playing was - for me - edgier and more unpredictable. All played using .013 gauge strings!

Thumbs Carlisle was playing like that back in the 60s, he taught himself after watching steel players.

Not at all new but pretty damn clever, I seem to remember an Aussie prog rock bass player playing the same way back around 1969-70 as well

Ah, glad someone mentioned him. One of my favourite YouTube clips of him is this all-star jam.

Rush are absolutely fantastic, good shout, Alex Lifeson is great.

Here is a great piece from Yngwie Malmsteen. I will preface this by saying that I can only stand Yngwie in very small doses - there is only so much harmonic minor one man can take. However, this video is imo one of his best performances for a couple of reasons. It showcases his incredible touch and command with the instrument, his dynamics and vibrato are phenomenal. He plays with incredible ferocity and passion here, and he is spot on with his runs, especially apparent as there is nowhere to hide with that orchestra backing. Also, he was heavily involved with the orchestration of this concert, showing another talent. It's unfortunate that his massive ego, drinking habit and being screwed over by two managers in his career severely stunted his creativity. He was amazing, made his money, got a drinking habit and crashed his Ferrari, got ripped off big time by his managers and felt the only way he could make his money back was to keep giving the fans what they expected from him, and in that, never broke out of the box he built for himself about 30 years ago, and he is still stuck in it.

Anywhere, here he is at his best, giving an incredible performance to a rousing, bombastic piece:

"Far Beyond the Sun" starts at about 02:55.
