I'm looking to replace my ageing Thorens TD166 mkvi which has developed a horrible knock on the motor. I'm torn between the Rega RP1 with the performance pack and the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Premium with Ortofon 2M RED cartridge. Does anyone have any opinions on which of these would be the better buy from experience or any other suggestions would be also welcome.

I don't want to buy second hand in this instance and at the moment I'm inclined to get the Rega simply because I can't decide between the two but the Rega is british.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm staggered by the performance of my Pro-Ject Essential 2, and What Hifi reviewed it as being best value up to £400.

I've never listened to a Pro-ject turntable, but I did listen to an RP1 performance pack when auditioning speakers a few weeks ago and was very impressed.

The dealer in question (not sure if I'm allowed to name them on here, but they are based in Coventry) was also offering £40 worth of records from their selection as an incentive, which of course is what it is all about smile

Thanks for the responses. I got the project debut carbon in the end. Really happy with it.

Cheers,

I've had one of those for a couple of years now, excellent turntable.
