PRS pay the composer every time it is played (theoretically anywhere in the world, but I never see any money from Italy or Greece!). Current rate for prime time TV for UK is £84 per minute. It's based on estimated viewing figures, so coast to coast in the USA is worth a lot more.

PPL pay the musicians who play on the tracks - it's nothing like as much.

This is just for jobbing musos like me... If you are famous and allow your music to be associated with a brand it can be VERY lucrative.

Beckham makes more from his name than he ever did with his boot.
I should have just agreed with you but answered before I scrolled down.

Yup, fully agree - we had a couple of singles A & B listed in the UK on radio and started to make in-roads to the US rock stations, the earnings jumped a fair bit - we had stuff used on TV and a silly thing like having a guest on TFI Friday use one of our tracks as his intro, or our publishers doing a deal with Sky so another track was used as the theme for their Monday night footy show one season.

These things make a big difference.

Also, publishing deals are a completely different animal to record deals.

I really need to re-register with PRS - I wonder if there's been much accrued in the last ten years or so hehe

I believe Adele writes her own songs which is, and always has been, where the real money is made.
Bob Dylan wrote one of her biggest hits ("Feel My Love").

He's probably her Number One fan

Her album was the biggest selling albumin the usa in 2011 ,and remarkably in 2012 as well.
Albums don't sell like they used to ,but 21 did ,selling 15m units in the usa and uk in those 2 years alone.
Yes, album sales are massively down across the board, but she is one of the lucky few with really good crossover album sales - 21 was 'the' album to have so everyone bought for their granny, dog etc with heavy radio play to go with it. See also Ed Sheeran who is the current equivalent. Her 2nd album has the 4th highest sales of any album ever in the UK, and was a global success too.

Is Calvin Harris not young at 31 with £70m?
He is utterly creaming it isn't he. wasn't it 40 million just last year?
he gets an absolute $hit ton of money from playing in vegas at least once a week over the summer. think its $400k per set he plays, at least one a week, private jets between there and ibiza where he'll be getting similar. not too bad a summer gig!

fair play to him, aged 30, getting paid millions to travel around in private jets and play music and getting a swing at taylor swift..... the boy is living the dream! however one thing that really bugs me, his names not even calvin harris, its f**king Adam Willes!!
It was only a few years ago he was bhing to anyone that would listen about how little money he was making from selling albums.

I think that's right. Isn't the rate for singer/songwriter currently about £45 per radio play. Worldwide, that's a lot of money.

I know a sound engineer who makes not a lot yet gets a few pennies from some music that he wrote decades ago. Does OK out of it.

I still can't quite get being paid loads to play other people's records and they don't take any requests anymore biggrin
