Lounge & chillout- Is it just me?
Discussion
Well, I guess we have all been there.
You finally made it back home after a long day at work. Pour yourself a drink, have a cigarette (in a dry, warm place), if you like.
Lean back and relax, nice & easy background tune would now be just perfect. Nothing with too much "message", not too shallow, either- just right.
I found lounge/ chill stuff does it for me. And here is the issue: music classified as "lounge or chill" nowadays is mostly outright st that can be basically classified into 2 categories (happy to stand corrected):
a) Funeral/ suicide/ self- pity- filled howling of accented negativity
b) Talent- free young female "artist", "performing" at- least- 1- octave- too- high- pitched- hollow cover versions of Sade, Al Green, or similar. The type of music I would imagine to be played in Eastern- European brothels (again happy to stand corrected).
Is it just me? Am I getting old or is there really only horrendous crap being played on the radio (I use a Cambridge Audio internet radio speaker thing in the kitchen)?
I listen to anything between classical, jazz/ fusions/ chill (e.g. Fragile State, the Egg, etc.) to melodic death metal during weekends depending on mood/ alcohol level, but focusing on Lounge & Chill on this occasion:
1. What internet radio stations would you recommend and
2. Anything new out there (CDs, internet, whatever) in that genre that screams "quality"?
Please help

"Instrumental" is a way around the problem, I agree. However, and if I am not mistaken, vocals are are an integral component of Lounge/ Chill music but sadly most of the time, once the artist opens his/ her mouth (option 1 or 2 in the OP), the "off" button is the only viable alternative.
What I am looking for is a kind of balancing act between 70's elevator/ supermarket music and Massive Attack/ Blue Six/.
I am aware that's unfortunately unlikely to happen- therefore looking for recommendations

Love your descriptions. Perhaps it's time to find another genre that suits the mood?

Minimal techno is where it's at for me. Berlin is the centre of the minimal universe. It's not always slow, but it is still relaxing and the techno beat ensures that all thoughts of your st day are shut out.

I'm not sure if they're still recording, but I always loved the work of Kruder & Dorfmeister for a late night chillout with a spliff. For example :-
Gotta Jazz
Trans Fatty Acid
Jazz Master
Eastwest
And finally, quite the best chillout tune ever IMVHO :-
Future Past by Genetica

Personal note. I'm a bit of a closet Lamb fan.Trans Fatty is a great track. This is a great, great mix/reworking of it.
For the OP, Lou can really sing.

Not heard that Lamb tune before; Lou's still got such a great voice and style.
It reminds me a little of this chillout vocal from Zero 7 :-
In The Waiting Line

New(ish) album. Worth a listen. Bits of it are elegant. Bits of it are knarley. Bits of it are both. Some of it doesn't work imho, and your mileage may vary. But "in binary", "nobody else" and "doves and Ravens" work for me.

You're welcome!
Bonobo are great.You're welcome!
Some others: Air, Zero 7, Royksopp (sp?).
I like my techo too so a bit of Aphex Twin, Global Communication, Brian Eno, etc. doesn't go a miss. Recently been enjoying Public Service Broadcasting's Race for Space too.
