I have just started using Spotify on my smartphone to stream music on headphones while I get some exercise.

I have the ability to create my own playlists and, at present, only have 2: Classic Rock & Modern Rock.

A quick look at my 'Modern' category shows me that most are still well over 20 years old: Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, STP, The Cult etc. Even AC/DC Blow Up Your Video is in my modern category for fk's sake.

Anyone else stuck in the past?

The modern stuff I do find myself listening to sometimes is by Audioslave, Royal Blood, Rival Sons and whatever the latest Foo and RHCP album is. That kind of stuff.

Are there any/many bang up to date rock outfits that would tickle my fancy?

I appreciate that, just like PH, music aint what it used to be, but surely there must be a modern Vedder, Cornell or Astbury.

Yours,

An old fart.

Only recently but I've found the past year or so my music choices are pretty much rap music from 92-98 with a few things either side if its just me and if its a family outing in the car then soul or jazz music from 70-85.

Not really heard much new music that I want to listen to past its natural radio life span.

Very few modern artists interest me, Guthrie does, but most bands bore me. Artic monkeys and Tame Impala are rather good and I like, but the bands you mentioned don't get me going.

Good Job Sabbath reformed! Actually I don't like 13 so cant be too pleased...

Oh and I like Taylor Swift.

Pretty much the newest playlists I've got on Spotify are the 'Madchester' years (Happy Mondays, Stone Roses etc)as well as the more dancey stuff like Fat Boy Slim, Chemical Brothers, or anything that was on the Skint label around the late 90's.
Other than that its all older 80's stuff. I've really got into Rolling Stones, The Who, Kinks etc though as well in the last couple of years.
As for anything past 2000, nothing really of interest for me.

Yes, very much so.

I have tried to embrace more recent music, but nothing released this century compares to older stuff for me.

Can't really put my finger on why exactly, but most recent stuff sounds flat and uninteresting to me. I suspect a combination of lack of talent, unoriginality and over-production.

You are not alone, I would say it is because you invested emotionally in the music of your past, just like a best friend, & while you do make new friends they will never take the place of your best mate.
I like many of my school mates was into rock like Free, Hawkwind, Wishbone Ash, Neil Young, but when the likes of Bowie, Roxy, King Crimson, Velvet Underground & Kraftwerk entered my radar the rock stuff stayed at the back of my mind for years, even though I no longer listened to it.
The bonus was that when I started listening to the rock stuff again I loved it even more, because it was "new" but also very familiar, & I appreciated it all the more because of that.

There's an element of that to be sure, but I also 'discover' artists & music from the 70s, 80s, 90s etc that I'd never heard or even heard of before, and they rock my world, if you'll excuse the pun. Very little I 'discover' from now has the same effect.

Yep, I'm well and truly stuck in the past. I'm in my late 40's and only find myself choosing to listen to early 90's Drum and Bass/Jungle/Rave type music. Most recent music very quickly bores me too much.

90s - early 2000's hip hop, jungle, prodigy. All so much better than any modern stuff.

Listened to Happy Mondays, Garbage, and Skunk Anansie on the way to work this morning, so in answer to the OP's question, Yes. biggrin

Latest album I bought was 2Cellos and I wouldn't exactly class them as modern biggrin

I think its easy to think this, but then in 15 years time when you have loads of great music from the 2000's you can say the same things over again. The time just allows the classics to shine through the volume of mediocrity.

I am stuck, simply because there is no great music around, I watched Killing Joke play last night in Corby and they would piss over any modern band live.

Can't help I'm afraid, benjj

I fking love Soundgarden and Pearl Jam (my guitar is currently tuned DGDGBE to play Superunknown), the most recent CD in the autochanger in the E39 is Simple Things by Zero 7, the radio is hard-wired to BBC R3, and even the trance CD in the car is an Oakenfold mix from 1999!

Yeah, I'm stuck in the past.

Glad I'm in such illustrious company smile

The E39 come t above made me smile. I've just driven to the office in my E39 listening to Charlatans Melting Pot on the CD changer. If it ain't broke...

Thanks for links above, will have a listen later. Also a friend has just suggested Foals. So far liking their vibe.

They sure ain't no Cornell though.
