I'm more or less in the same boat! I quite like the strokes, and i think Tool are probably the best metal band ever, but as far as guitar based music goes emost modern music sounds a bit pants to me.

Pop music is pretty stable imo, stuff like taylor swift and katy perry is comparable to what kylie and madonna were doing in their pomp.

The genre which is at an all time low imo is rap. i struggle to find anything remotely interesting from the last 10 years

I feel I am regressing to the decade around my birth, so 66-76, with preference to 70-76 are some of my favourite music periods.

the 90s get a good nod, and 80s alternative too, but rock (dance/hip hop etc are obviously different and have their appeal) just feels like rehashing what peaked in the early 70s.

Last cd I bought was Saints of Los Angelis by Motley Crue and before that Final Frontier by Iron Maiden!

WASP, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Poison are the most played bands on the iPod in the car so very much stuck in the 80's and 90's.

Same here. My musical tastes are very much stuck to 80s/early 90s.

Music never gets old and the artists have left past and present fans a legacy, if you like it stick with it. Why would you force yourself to listen to the dross thats played daily on Crapital FM ?

Anyone else listen to Biffy Clyro or Kasabian? About the most "modern" bands I think are worth a listen.
Other than that its Foos, Chilis and then all my dads influences, the Stones, Floyd and the like.

I don't agree fully with above. There are 'loads' more you could add from the 60s/70s. As for 'after 85' nowhere near so many I grant you, but surely more than a solitary one?

What I find odd over the years is just how little, almost nothing, is ever played on air by Wishbone Ash (I'm talking 70s WA before the band member instability kicked in). Such a good live band. And for a group that got such acclaim for their album Argus - voted 'Best Album of the Year' by readers of Sounds mag and 'Top British Album' by Melody Maker, I find it odd. Even Barclay James Harvest get played now and then, but Wishbone Ash? Nah.

Talking of BJH, I saw them live a couple times. I had a friend who just broken up with his girlfriend who liked 'Poor Man's Moody Blues' at the time who asked if their other songs were as good? I said have a listen to 'Suicide' - he said what a strange record title, I said give it a listen but ensure you're not alone, and don't have too many drinks! Next day he told me he virtually ste himself when that loud door boom comes at the end... Christ, he said, nobody should EVER listen to that song if in an unstable state of mind!

My default stance is to agree with the O/P (seeing as the bulk of my listening can be found on Absolute 80's, Absolute 70's & Classic Rock) however then I got to thinking...

Three Doors Down
Three Days Grace
Evanescence
Shinedown
Sixx A.M.
Steel Panther (yes I know, I know!)
Nightwish
Halestorm
Poets of the Fall

just off the top of my head. Youtube is a great resource for finding new stuff wink

Errr, well with well over 8,000 posts on the BJH Forum and having seen them live over thirty times since 1975, I think it's fair to say I have heard Suicide once or twice.smile

The Song was recorded at 10cc's Strawberry studio's in Stockport, the sound of the lift was the studios, and the footsteps were the sound of the late great Woolly Wolstenholme's clogs.

My personal cut-off is Live Aid. That was the peak of music for me (specifically the Queen gig) anything after that just doesn't seem to have the same sparkle and originality. That may be more to do with me than anything objective, but there we are. In terms of diversity, I did buy Alte Musik - Renaissance Masterpieces and the Clubber's Guide to Trance at the same time. Strangely, in this Internet world, I do find it harder to find new stuff than 20 years ago, but it is out there!

I don't "get" hip-hop (although strangely I do enjoy Chap-Hop) but I'm certainly not going to dismiss it, I hugely admire the ability to freestyle. As I say, it's not my thing, but wow, the ability to effectively write poetry in real time is phenomenal.

I've always found it really, really, really hard to hear any music on 6 music. Every time I turn over to see if it's changed there's just someone talking. Just tried it now and found the same.

Really?

I've bought shedloads of stuff just by hearing it on 6, I'd recommend listening to Tom Ravenscroft. He really does play some good stuff.
