That's ace, The Vapors are one of my all time great bands... News At Ten would be one of my Desert Island Disks.

What was he like?

If you were a musician in my school, you got beaten up.

I got beaten up, often.

Still, many of them ended up in prison, some ended up dead - and I ended up with a career.

...what goes around.

BTW The school was cited as the UK's most violent in a TV documentary some years later, and had to be closed, re-staffed and renamed.

That'll learn yer' for getting sent to Borstal. biggrin

No, I know what you mean, being sort of creative was frowned upon, or even drummed out of students at certain schools.

That's mostly changed these days.

Thank Heavens.

I only found out about this a few years back, when I read a book on my old school (written by my old history teacher!) that Helen O'Hara, the violinist in Dexy's Midnight Runners, is a former pupil. She was a year or two below me, but wasn't calling herself O'Hara then so I never saw the connection.

Matt Letley, for many years the drummer with Status Quo, was one of my best mates at school.

I also remember teasing Nitin Sawhney at lunchtimes, he was a couple of years younger.

I'm pretty sure someone else famous also went there, maybe it'll come to me (Rochester Math).

Whilst still at school I used to jam with other mates at James JTQ Taylor's house.

Woman across the road from me when I was a nipper is Elton John's cousin.

I briefly dated a woman who lived off the royalties she received monthly from her divorce settlement - her ex played bass for a VERY famous 60s/70s band. He's no longer famous, lives as a recluse in another country.

And my cousin, who shall remain nameless, has had more top 40 hits than you could shake a stick at.

I frequently wish I'd pursued a career in music, I just wasn't confident enough.

Hylton Valentine and I think John Steel from The Animals were a few years above me and Dave Black who went on to form Goldie (a popular one hit band from the 70;s). Dave still does the rounds of Tyneside -haven't seen him for a few years.

The bass player - pretty good at English but left at 16. I remember seeing a red Ferrari 246 parked outside his house.

JJ Burnel was a bit older than me.
