In a rather interesting twist, I'll be meeting the girl I fell in love with (and lost) to that album on Saturday.

For the first time in 30 years.
So...................how did it go ?

It was good.

We sat and talked a lot, so much so the host of the party told us to split up to make us chat to other people. She's still pretty, hardly changed, no kids but has adopted, partner seemed a bit taken aback at first but turns out he's as big a music fan as me, so we got on well. All fine despite that little devil-voice inside my head going "ask her why, ask her why?"

In the end, not asking is one of those things you do that stop the truth from hurting you.

And probably stopping you getting chucked out of the party with a split lip.

Nope. Just popped it in to see who'd spot the reference. smilesmilesmile

But apt lyrics given the circumstances. (as are many on that album to my life in general.)

London Calling - The Clash. Bought it as a vinyl album on day of release, still not bored by it.
Yep, me too. Still haven't heard anything that comes close to overtaking it as my favourite album of all time.

The Blue Aeroplanes - Beatsongs.

I went to see this lot at Sheffied Leadmill in 1991 after a Melody Maker gig review mentioned they had 5 guitarists on the go & did a cover of Paul Simon's "Boy In The Bubble". This turned out to be just about the best band I'd ever seen with their 5 guitarists & Paul Simon cover so I bought myself the Beatsongs CD. I still have it, with it's crushed & cracked brittle plastic case. I love music, I really do, I love & have loved certain bands above all others, Depeche Mode, Suede, Cocteau Twins, Afghan Whigs even CUD & The Wonderstuff (for my sins) & with all of their albums there have been (even through rose tinted lenses ) the odd stinker or two nestled between the good stuff, track 4 usually?? Anyway , Beatsongs has no such weakness or musical glitch, in my mind it's just about bloody perfect. Bob Dylan, REM, The Go Betweens, Velvets, The Beatles & The Stones mixed up & spat out in 50 minutes or so.

Later albums were nowhere near, the one before, "Swagger" wasn't far off but this one hits the spot.

Bugger. Somebody beat me to TPP. Well sod it, that's my choice too. More than music for me, a part of my inner soul, and sounds exactly how i think - even today.
Sorry KJ, was surprised someone hadn't beat me to TPP as well. Can't agree more with your words, got the album in 1979 (my first record) and it has been a constant ever since.

Although his direction since 2000 or so is (I think) brilliant and live he just gets better every time I see him, the whole soundscape of TPP will never be bettered in my opinion.

There are many great albums.

There are far less that changed the music world forever.

I'm struggling to decide which one to decide.

I have a small handful that revolution music from that day on...

I have a bigger handful that stood on the shoulders of giants...

Tough call this one...

Shouldn't it be about albums you never tire of listening to rather than anything else.

Interesting thread. One album? Not possible.

I haven't heard of half the bands mentioned so far but I suppose maj of PHs were 'rocking' in the late 80s/90s whereas my ilk were in the midst of sex drugs and rock an' roll of the 60s! What caught my eye and instigated a response was the interesting-twist remark from Hypno-Toad about an album and parting with girlfriend and how f. old he is now!

When I was 18 it was a good year. A really good year. Bournemouth front one sultry summer evening and walking up the beach front, as a teenager I began hearing this fantastic guitar work - keep it short, it was Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac (as they were called then). Jesus, I couldn't get in but stood on the front grass outside this venue with many, many others. Start of one 'love' affair that never ends (with all the Mac incarnations to date). Hope you're keeping well, Danny (Kirwan) - 65 back in May - and Peter (Green of course, the God, not Clapton!)

So many groups from that period and the 70s into 1980, chrise it was soooo good. I remember watching Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on tour on the College circuit here in the UK in 1980 at Oxford Polytechnic. I think I paid a couple of quid!! That session is apparently even on YouTube. Someone said that night it was being filmed. Which of their albums would I choose? Impossible. But as a song Refugee is timeless.

I'll keep it short again (as he plods on keying more). Back to 1970 and another magical group (someone has mentioned them) Wishbone Ash. I'd got their first album, then the 2nd Pilgrimage. Met new girlfriend during this period and mention to her that the new W Ash album is coming out and I can't wait to get it ...what would eventually become their blockbuster album of 1972, Argus.

'She' bought it for me (on cassette). Just one problem when I got it from her on Sunday 30 April (it had been released Friday 28 April), I noted the reel tape was midway. Hmm. Odd. Anyway, I wanted the LP as well but she'd bought it for me to play in the car. She stuck it in the car cassette player and she started bloody singing to the words, knew 'em all! I'm driving along open mouthed! Time Was starts '...I've got to rearrange my life, I've got to rearrange my world. I miss you, I need you.' As it played, she sung! And sung! I thought bloody hell, how many times have you played this? Turns out she and her best friend had played it all night and throughout Saturday too!

Long story even shorter. We married in 74. 41 years later we're still together.
I still play it, but one album, would it be this? Nah, I couldn't pick nor stick to one album - impossible.

Plus, in this day and age, who'd just 'listen' when video abounds and takes you back to then. Time was, eh?

Re my comment about the Polytechnic in 1980 I just looked and Petty concert is on there, all of it. I think I can even spot myself in the audience!

Go 29min30sec in and I'm among those turning looking into camera ...then they play Refugee. Chrise, seems like yesterday, bet some on here weren't born then. biggrin
