Excellent, I'm flying back from Azerbaijan to go and see these playing with Saxon at Hull City Hall next month, haven't seen Magnum for about 30 years, but still see Saxon whenever I can.

Fantastic! I have never seen Magnum, frown I have seen Bob Catley with Avantasia though, it was brilliant.

Don't know about being the oldest at a gig but I took my Son to see Eric Clapton when he was about 12 and had recently started guitar lessons.

We both noticed that he was the youngest there... music
Oddly, we took my then 12 year old stepson to see Bruce Springsteen last year. He wasn't the youngest there, he was quite keen on playing guitar and bass...he's since given them both up completely!

i was at Orbital in December and it was full of middle aged ex ravers. turned around to 1 dad & son combo and asked how old the lad was; 12. What a great introduction to music from a Dad to a son.

equally go to lots of gigs where the target is probably younger (Jorja Smith springs to mind of late) but if the talent is good then i don't care what people think.

I did see a listing for a Ride gig next month, I'd quite like to see them - but it's at the London Uni, and as I said to my mate who I go to gigs with, would they actually let us in? biggrin Might have to draw the line there!

I play in an Indie covers band (blur, oasis, stereophonics type things 80's to today).
We got booked for a 50th birthday party and the rest of the lads were "are you sure" they know what we do right its not Elvis and the Beatles. I was quite specific that we only do that genre of music and its a '50th'

It was worth pointing out that I'm 46 and the youngest member of the band. What we play is from their teens and twenties.

It went very well.

I guess that's OK. Only the drummer really needs to be able to count and even he usually only needs to get to 4...

You buy a ticket, they let you in. Ive been to plenty of uni gigs .... The age of the crowd varies with who's playing. Btw i saw Ride last year and it was a great show. I'm 58 and i wasn't the oldest there, and i wouldn't care if i was.

At my age i think I'm too old to go to any gig except classical ones.

Indeed it's over a decade since i went to a big gig (I don't count pub gigs because if I'm in the pub anyway I'll listen but I don't go specifically for the music) and that was the Shadows so at 49 I was probably the youngest person there.

I'm in my 50s and go to gigs all the time. Setting off for my 4th Cruise to the Edge this weekend although to be fair that's full of oldies.

Not bothered what others think, if it's youngster orientated I just stand at the back doing my best "music impresario" impression to fool them. Young Guns in some student bar springs to mind.

Once went to Reading and was having a rest, a beer and a chat in one of the big tents. It started filling up slowly, the lights dimmed and next thing we knew we were in the middle of hundreds of 20 somethings in some trance like show jumping up and down with lasers and all sorts. None of those around us seemed to mind, fantastic fun.

Also saw Magnum this year (in Pwllheli) after first seeing them support Rush in about 1980. There was an old dear 70ish right at the front belting out all their songs word for word without a care. Marvellous.

Then got a spare ticket for Stone Sour, who I'd never heard of, and a similar experience. A silver surfer (70+) in front with her daughter was stood up shouting all the obscene lyrics, "it's all downhill from here, motherf*ckers" whilst gesticulating away wildly. The husband was sat down next to them obviously wishing he'd stayed at home.

It's a lead I certainly intend to follow. Isn't that one of the few advantages of getting old. You don't give a f*ck.

Another cruise to the edge, seem to remember your other posts on this. Wonder how steve howe is doing after the death of his son last year. Anathema sound interesting, I have a few of their cds. Have a good one.

I wasn't being completely serious, but the thought of going to a Student's Union at the tender age of 57 did amuse me! As it turns out, my mate can't make the actual date. So unless I can persuade someone else…

Bear in mind your average ride fan is going to be nearer your age than a students age.

I saw "From the Jam" at the Guildford Student Union a year or two ago!

It was like an alternate universe as I never went to University, but did listen to the Jam when I was the right age to!

Just back from another great CTTE, don't tell anyone though or they'll put the prices up. Sadly Anathema pulled out at the last minute but the other Headliners were excellent as always. Yes played their Greatest Hits this year after Topographic Oceans last year but sadly SteveH to my eyes was well off the pace and played a lot of duff notes (didn't know about his son).

It was new "supergroup" Sons of Apollo's first ever gig but not that impressed with Ron "Bumblefoot " Thal (8 years guitarist with Guns and Roses). Not as good as he thinks he is. Singer Jeff Scott Soto great though and some good pounding tunes.

Biggest surprise was some psychedelic rock with Gong (anyone remember them, I've got an album somewhere?) which totally suited the venue and audience and brought the house down plus the quirky Knifeworld which freshened up this year's cruise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzXVxOT8an0

Both groups now led by the charismatic and entertaining Kavus Torabi who deserves to be a star.

They're only used as a filler on the cruise (2nd time this year) but I'm a huge fan of these insanely talented blokes (Heavy Mellow).

If you get a chance to see them do so, you'll be amazed.

Onwards to next year...

We were at this!! Load of us 45-50ish- amazing night with likeminded old ravers out of retirement for the night!!
I suspect many had not nibbled any party supplies for a number of years and were all having a lovely time!!
I had a girl next to me, muttering something to herself for a good 10 minutes, eventually tuned into her during a bit of a lull......" Why did I ever stop doing this" was what she was telling herself!! Great stuff!!

Must be tough on Steve, it's only 6 months since Virgil's death. I wonder how this will affect him in the long term.

Heavy mellow sound good, I'll keep an eye out for them.

So the rest of the band are all 50s but assumed that another person of a similar age to them would have music tastes far older than them? That makes no sense.
