My dad likes '50s rock 'n' roll which I suddenly got into a couple of years ago and now I hardly listen to anything other than R&R and related genres (i.e. '40s/'50s country, blues, R&B and doo-wop). He only listens to R&R and dislikes country and blues (except he doesn't because he likes everything Elvis did, but he refuses to acknowledge that some of it is country and R&B).

He also likes Abba and Brotherhood of Man. I detest them.

My Dad has a great taste in music (IMO) and we try to go to at least one gig a year together.

He introduced me to Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Peter Frampton, Ted Nugent, Joe Satriani, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, Dokken, Gary Moore, Thunder, Walter Trout, Queensrÿche, ZZ Top, Bad Company, John Hiatt, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Foreigner... and he plays it all loud too!

What I listend to in the car informed my musical tastes I think - Led Zep, Queen, Bowie, Meat Loaf, Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Dylan..

In later years I have been the driver and my dad the passenger - I have introduced him to Radiohead, Arcade Fire, White Stripes, The Verve, The Black Keys, Silversun pickups, Pulp, Elastica - and he has adopted these into his listening. I now inflict my music on my kids - each car journey is musical education as far as I'm concerned.

Loved my old mans music.

He was a massive Stranglers fan so I grew up on those. But it was at a Stranglers gig a few yearss back I saw Wilko Johnson and Norman Watt-Roy supporting. I've got my dad to thank for that because I absolutely LOVE Wilko and Dr.Feelgood.

My Dad listened to good music in the car until the late 70s (Stones, Beatles, but never Led Zeppelin - silly man!), but then he went very MOR when he hit 40. I am determined never to close my mind or ears to newer music.
I'm afraid my parents listened to more middle of the road stuff (Abba, Neil Diamond, John Denver to name a few I remember them playing on the 8 track(!) at home and in the car.

However, like you I'm trying to keep an open mind to newer music, despite being nearly at the half a century mark. eek I still listen to the Radio 1 live lounge regularly and think there are plenty of decent bands/artists coming up. Although I think it's maybe had it's time, I watch Jools Holland (granted I record it, so I can skip the ones I really can't get on with).

I play guitar and go to a college night class where we mostly learn 70s classic rock and while I do enjoy it, I find that in the pub discussions afterwards most of the other players seem very stuck in that musical era and haven't really moved on.

Why the fk has this been moved to music? It's got bugger all to do with music in any real sense.

Mods, largely clueless.

Ones that have stuck are Genesis and Fleetwood Mac.

But not Sade.

I don't think my parents like the Mods...though they didn't really like the rockers either. smile

My father seems to listen to things like 'The Philharmonic Orchestra Plays The Beatles'.

If I ever start liking that I'll shoot myself! shoot

My dad didn't really listen to music at all apart from hymns, because he was a part time methodist preacher.

My daughter likes some Thrash metal, and I often find my CD's going missing, so chip off the old block.

We used to jump in the car on a Friday evening to drive down to our caravan where we went sailing practically every weekend, and there was always music playing in the car. Lots of Wings, and Simon and Garfunkel (I used to love 'Baby Driver' because of the car noises), occasional Neil Diamond, but also stuff like Status Quo and The Rolling Stones ("Rolled Gold"). Really liked the Stones and "Band on the Run", but gradually as I discovered music I wandered off into the blues, rock, Queen, Genesis, INXS, etc., etc., and then onto Nirvana, late discovery of Led Zep, etc., etc.

I used to borrow some of dad's records, and they used to borrow mine to make up tapes for the car journeys. Roll forward some 30 years or more, and I still like the Stones, and "Band on the Run", but I appreciate them more now. And when dad and I go off on trips, I stick the iPod on in the car and get the odd "who's that then ?" and "can I borrow that when we get back ?!", which is cool.

But now I'm sharing a love of music with my daughter (15) - some of my music collection is what she describes as 'vintage' (Nirvana, vintage... *feels old* ), but we both like stuff like the Foo Fighters, she's introduced me to the Arctic Monkeys, I've been playing Oasis, etc., etc., back and forth. And I'm always on the listen out for new bands and music I've maybe not heard before.

And we've been to see about four gigs this year - just the two of us as my wife isn't that fussed about music. Been really fun seeing bands like the Strypes and Foo Fighters at two totally different venues, and we went to the Bluesfest at the O2 to see Tedeschi Trucks band. Best show of the year though was Gary Clark Jr.

So yes, I liked, and still like, my dad's music. And now my daughter and I are going through the same musical journey too.

My Dad only ever listened to classical and jazz, and didn't like anything else, he just called it 'noise.' There's no worse noise than jazz in my book!
Fortunately I have always loved classical music so when we were in the car I could listen to classical (jazz was banned) and he could just about tolerate my tastes. (Reluctantly.)

I still play the same music I always have in the car. About 10 years ago I stopped listening to anything new, however this didn't result in my becoming a boring old MOR fan.

My dad never listened to music. Probably why I ended up doing what I do. (He wanted me to get a proper job).

My dad's always had a thing for guitar music, in particular a band called Sky which he listened to a lot when I was a kid. He took us to see them live once - great gig!

I think I inherited an element of my dad's musical taste.

He liked Jazz and female vocalists (Astrud Gilberto, Carly Simon, for example).

I can't say I ever really got into jazz, but I do like female vocalists, both in bands and solo. For example, I like Sheryl Crow, Sara Bareilles and Florence and the Machine.

I also like latin music, which I suspect I picked up from the Gilbertos and Sergio Mendes that my dad played.

So, he had an influence, but I reckon New Order are my favourite band and I'm a big Clash fan too and I can't really see that coming from my dad's music collection, although maybe Jazz was his generation's Punk?

I go to some gigs with my daughter, some of modern performers and others from the era when I was really interested in music (the late 70s and 80s) - I don't know how much of my taste rubs off biggrin
