This is a safe place to talk about DB, the news thread has already turned into a Beatles vs Bowie FIGHT!

Anyway, if I cast my mind back I seem to recall being quite fond of little china girl when I was around 8 or ten, and the obvious 'pop' stuff that he was doing at the time. But he was on my radar and later in my teens I found Heroes and my mind was blown. At that time he would have been releasing 1.Outside which lets face it isn't going to strike a chord with everyone, but it did with me. What strikes me about all his work is that it seems timeless, and when you think you've heard it all, a track like 'somebody up there' appears on grand theft auto san andreas and you start again. My musical taste is very broad and I like to think that it's largely in part to his wide ranging influence.

Even yesterday, I was hearing songs which I wasn't familiar with. Incidently, bbc 6 music did an astonishing job of covering his work yesterday, simply amazing under the circumstances. I'd been meaning to buy Black Star all weekend, and on Monday following the news it was the first thing I did. Managed to find the time to listen to it, and got as far as Dollar Days before shedding a tear. That song in particular is incredibly powerful given the situation he was in.

I don't like to use the word legend as I don't think it really sums up his significance, for me, he's gone way beyond that.

To think it all came from the bloke that wrote and performed 'love you till tuesday' which is a bit crap really. Imagine being told that he was going to have a career spanning 5 decades and become a global influence when that was released? Or maybe you want to have that conversation with someone after they've listened to the 'laughing gnome'?

I had resigned myself to the fact that at his age anymore work was likely to be his last, but I still struggle to comprehend this is the end. I suspect and hope that maybe, just maybe there's another piece of work tucked away somewhere for us to enjoy at a later date.

If Black Star is the end, then it closes a chapter on an amazing life that through his music I've had a tiny glimpse into.

Bowie was the one constant in my life, he was my hero, he gave me the most brilliant soundtrack of music to accompany my life, for which I will forever be thankful.
His death has shocked me, at a time when I was already grieving the loss of my mother just a week earlier, again from cancer.
I pre-ordered Blackstar, & had watched videos of Blackstar & Lazarus quite a few times, & I don't know if it was because of my mental state at the time, but I was already saying that the lyrics had a great foreboding to them, he really is/was trying to tell us something.
I will miss him.

I'm a general music fan and have an interest in its progression and originality. How influential do we think Visconti was to Bowie's evolution?

I think I need to have a good listen of some of Bowie's more 'influential' and original work, if anybody has particular recommendations?

NB. Originality a good song does not make, of course.

Last year I said I would take her back and today I did. First time I had been to a specific place in over 30 years.

Yup, I just had a trip down memory lane today with the missus, revisiting some places where I was fortunate enough to spend time in some very good company, something I rarely break cover on but have done over the last 10 days or so. Anyway, we had a great time walking some very nice roads and looking at a few old but beautiful houses and reminiscing.

Afterwards, we went to visit my mum. Coincidentally my brother and his missus popped in where we discussed what happened this week which inevitably led to the past. I got a lot of questions about all sorts of things and as I left, my mum gave me all the clippings from the news she collected over the last week or so. That was sweet of the 85 year old girl. And when I think back to the bkings I used to get about steering clear... hypocrite smile

I got to thinking as we had retraced a younger life over a few hours and I was driving through some mild snow on the A3 heading home. Something is afoot. Mick - gone, Trevor - gone, David - gone, there is only one answer. They are getting the Spiders back together again.

FFS, take care Woody.

Picked up Black Star at the weekend ,think its a bit of a grower, but has the making of a brilliant album, maybe his best work, very atmospheric and moving ,but well its always there as you listen to it, If you know what I mean, the D word.
I suppose that will pass, cos I don't feel like that listening to Queen or Dusty.

Well the Bowie tribute concert acts are starting to filter out,and one of the acts mentioned makes me physically sick whenever i hear anything by them,Mumford and Sons.So strumming an acoustic guitar quickly is a talent??God help us all!
Blondie,Michael Stipe,Pixies also mentioned balancing things back to normality.
