I also wonder about something like "Hollow Talk" (Choir of Young Believers) if you divorce it from its obvious reminder as the credit music for "The Bridge" - lovely haunting, floaty piece of stuff. Audio marshmallow ....

Already covered but anything from Jon Hopkins. Moon Safari is an outstanding album.

Others to consider...
Zero 7
Ru Du Soleil
Skye (from Morcheeba)
Emiliana Torrini
Honeyroot
Ulrich Schnauss

Or just go for the Buddha Bar back catalogue, there's a gazillion albums to choose from.

The greatest album ever would be suitable Aja by Steely Dan.
Especially the title track!

My goodness the volume of replies is almost embarrassing.
Have now got a major job on my hands summarising all the music suggested & start searching & listening.
In fact the material suggested could well lead to my creating a new style of show with 100% emphasis on ambient soundscapes but NO pan pipes or whale sounds !!!!!
Furthermore I also need to create some CD's for the alternative physiotherapists at a hospice I also volunteer for. These sounds whilst tuneful must have NO triggers that might lead to awakening memories of past pleasures that could heighten awareness of a patients current plight.
And I thought Pistonheaders were just petrol heads.

LATE NIGHT TALES Bonobo & Jon Hopkins on my buy list so far - what a discovery ta a million.
Any of the late night tales albums would suit, all done by different artists. Also Zero 7 and Nightmares on Wax are two to look at.

I used to make a lot of soundscape mixes and Dead Skin Cells was my goto track if I was struggling to fill them out biggrin

I have pretty much all of the Bonobo back catalog. Nice and chilled.

I spent most of my hazy student days back in the 90's passing out to it.

Good call with Nightmares on Wax, I think I've got all his stuff. Very laid back groove.

Take a look at the playlists on the Jazz FM website for Claire Anderson's Late Lounge. It sounds like it's just the kind of thing you're looking for.

As already mentioned, I'd go with Zero 7, anything off their first two albums 'Simple Things' and 'When it Falls'.

Another one would be Mercury Rev's 'Goddess on a Highway' and 'Night and Fog'.

Oh and another Aretha Franklin's 'You and Me'. Stunning!

Some great suggestions all around here. Smokers delight by nightmares on wax was one of my fave albums at one point. If there's anything on this thread to try other than the anotherlatenight/late night tales series, it's that. Bonobo are class. As are cinematic orchestra, the irresistible force, air, skalpel, st germain, loads of things. I remember when Radio 1 were bealing on about new sensation Royksopp beign so new, different etc and thinking "that's 1/2 of my CD collection in 1 album".

Sadly, over the years (assisted by 2 car break ins and 1 car fire), I've lost so many great CD's. Thanks to all the contributors in this thread - reminded me of what I've missed since becoming old ans sensible. You just cost me 80 quid on amazon, you buggers!*

  • Of course,I mean this in the best possible way

A tribe called quest, especially the first album.
