Maybe, but candy cola red isn't one of the classic colours is it? IIRC lake placid blue has been around for decades, like candy apple red, sonic blue, and olympic white?
Candy Cola might not be mainstream, but I think my point is still valid...you can't buy an American Standard Strat in Candy Apple or Sonic Blue currently, for example:

(I know the OP is talking about Standard Strats, not Am STDs., but you take my point).

Personally I think you're nuts paying that much for a guitar for a beginner. A Squire or Pacifica will do the job and your boy can't even begin to exploit the potential of a Strat.

Buy a Pacifica and when if he grows out of it get a Strat.

Most of these threads go quiet and then we never hear another thing from the OP.
Here's the thing - if he achieves the goals I've set him I think it very likely that he will stick with the electric guitar. There are other reasons that I won't go into here. If I buy a Squier, then a Strat, I'll have spent about 1/3 more than I think I will otherwise need to. If that makes sense.

If you're concerned about not hearing from me again please feel free to give me a nudge around Christmas and I will give you an update.

... But if you want a candy apple red Strat for example, you could get a journeyman, a texas special classic 50s, a standard strat maple, a standard strat rosewood , a custom shop, a standard HSS, a Classic 60s, a deluxe HSS, a custom shop NOS, a Classic player 60s... I understand your point, but I think the traditional colours have been far more consistently available over the years than the custom colours, and I wouldn't rush a purchase due to worrying about lake placid blue being continued. Graffiti yellow, now that's another story ;-)

Mave,

Point taken, but I have been trying to help the OP who isn't as familiar with guitars as we are. I completely agree that there are lots of options/colours for starts, but that was part of the problem for the OP! Too much choice = confusion.

I initially suggested a Pacifica, but it became clear that the OP wanted a real Fender and seems to have his heart set on a Lake Placid Blue HSS Standard Strat; fair enough, it's a great choice. Consequently I just wanted to alert the OP to the fact that in six months time, that EXACT model/colour might no longer be available.

You quite rightly point out that inevitably, very similar specs/colours WILL be available, but given the OP isn't a guitarist I personally think they would be better off buying the one they have identified as fitting the bill now, rather than waiting until December and finding that they have to start all over again, then trying to workout whether a FSR in Daphne Blue or a Classic Player in Sonic Blue (or whatever) is the right choice.

In short, I think you are totally correct overall, but I was trying to solve the OP's dilemma on a 'need to know' basis.

I see your point entirely, I am torn to be honest. On one hand yes getting it now ensures the "right" one. On the other the ritual of going to the shop with me, WHEN HE HAS ACHHIEVED HIS TARGET, and picking out his own guitar will probably be an experience that sticks in his mind. And after all it's experiences that stick in the mind, not things.

Going to buy it with your son would be perfect. As Mave pointed out, you'll always be able to buy something very similar, if not identical, to the guitar you've currently identified as 'the one'. What's more, if your son is like most of us, he'll go in with his heart set on a Lake Placid Blue Strat, but then something else will catch his eye and you'll walk out with a completely different guitar!

Have fun :-)

Hi
So the strat bought for my daughter was a birthday present and thus a surprise. We had however been into a few shops and she had tried fenders, squires, etc.
She already has her heart set on a tele, for this one though will will both go into the shop, she will play, choose, and walk out with the one she wants......

:-) Years ago I went into a shop armed with my money on a mission to buy a baja telecaster - I ended up with a 335! :-o
