Caterham 620R at Goodwood

Even if you're feeling a little Goodwooded out this Caterham 620R run is well worth a minute of your time

Anyone going for a time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed needs plenty of denial about the possibilities of it all going a bit wrong, physical peril being somewhere down the scale when you consider the potential for humliation. So hats off to anyone willing to put it on the line. Hats off especially to Jon Barnes, who took the Caterham 620R up in 61.76 seconds, beating direct rivals like the Zenos E10 R, BAC Mono, Elemental RP1 and Lotus 3-Eleven among others. Indeed, in the Supercar Shootout he was third overall, beaten by a Porsche 911 Turbo S and Jan Mardenborough's Nissan GT-R but quicker than a host of more powerful and exotic vehicles, Praga R1R, McLaren 570S Sprint and Radical RXC Turbo among them.

Going by a press release from Caterham Barnes sounds like a bit of a geezer too. "Truth be told, my driving was a bit pants over the bottom part of the hillclimb," he says. "I was really angry and just ragged it over the top half." He's far too modest - this is a proper bit of driving in a car that goes like a lit firework.

Enjoy!

Some of the sideways bits there are terrifying, if you didn't manage to catch it you'd be on your way to a big accident. Looks like awesome fun though.

Presumably 51.76 seconds, not 61 as the article says?

Jon's a class act. Raced him once at Estoril, and it's fair to say he was on it then! Good video actually (if you'll excuse the shameless self promotion)

Last 4 laps at Estoril - Caterham R300

My excuse was it was my first race in an R300 and he's got a history with Caterham as their development driver. In reality, I was just thoroughly outpaced by him there! tongue out

Greatly enjoyed racing him, and watching his Goodwood 'action'. Petition to get him into the official shootout next year?

He was also a welcome friendly face in the British GT paddock last year. And for the sake of balance, he also did a pretty impressive lap in the LeMans support race last year. 3.59.9 was only about 5s off the LM GTE cars....

Great video. The last lap was genuinely tense to watch. Cracking racing.

Really miss it! Hopefully making a return in August. Can't beat a bit of Caterham racing...

I like you would like one. But pricey for me though. 420 would be a great compromise, as it would be a toy.

I'm also thinking of an Exige as this would be a daily car.

What an awesome drive up the hill though.

Hate to be a wet rag but why am I thinking Le Mans 1955 every time I look at someone 'on it' up the Goodwood hill?

It does make you wonder what would happen if someone had a 'big one'
