I'm not a huge Guthrie fan a lot of his stuff is too clever and fusionish for me but this is rather epic

And this for sheer energy and total epicness

Fantastic thumbup

On a related note (as I love Govan's playing), I've always rather liked this one:-

Guthrie & Gilbert Jam

Good time happiness guitar stuff

Eric Johnson is a monster acoustic player too, but we shouldn't be too surprised about that:

Too many notes, too fast to have "feel", what's wrong with sticking to a pentatonic box? I love the fallacies that the inept proliferate to try and tear down talented and dedicated musicians.

I think it's fine to say "impressive, but not my cup of tea" - those silly arguments tend to come out in conversations about who is "the best", as if it's a competitive sport.

I hope he doesn't mind me posting this, but Malam of this 'ere parish posted this up some years ago after buying a Boss looper pedal:-

Pictures by Dave Malam

I suspect he'd admit that this was an impromptu noodle, but its a bloody good one (it's in DADGAD tuning as he was kind enough to send me playing notes after watching it)

Another Vai clip that shows, if nothing else, that he's really just a guy who enjoys playing the guitar:-

Seen that one before, he is stumped, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but that Souza guy takes it a bit far. I'm all for copping licks and tricks (I use a lot of Richie Kotzen-isms myself) but whenever I see people asking "how can I sound like a certain guitarist" I always think they should be striving to sound like themselves. Still, Vai does play some cool licks in that video.

Here is another cool video of a guy called Mika Tysska, the guitarist behind the Mr Fastfinger cartoon / guitar instructional website. I love his style, he uses quite a lot of gain and a compressor set to an aggressive setting to really make every note pop and sound crisp. Mattias Eklundh does the same but his compressor settings are even more aggressive and he spends less time playing phrases and more time making weird noises compared to Mika.

Hendrix/Band of Gypsies playing Machine Gun live at the Filmore East. This is one of those things like A Love Supreme that I try not to play too often so as to prevent it's impact from fading, just an amazing, very special guitar moment.

Probably going to get shot down in flames for this but I keep coming back to Ed Sheeran live videos. OK it's ONLY one man with an acoustic guitar (+1 fancy loop pedal) and also mainly chord playing but the overall sound that can come from one man is awesome and utterly mesmerising. The skill, timing and practising that must go into these performances must surely match any 10 minute long solo - especially to do it flawlessly time after time.

Sorry shredders!!!
I'm certainly no hater of Ed Sheeran and frankly if anyone can make a living playing guitar in this day and age then power to them. But I do feel that he was a big inheritor of a mature technology by the time he made it big. KT Tunstall was already doing something similar years earlier, and brought it to mainstream success for example:

And then you have pretty much the entire Candyrat youtube channel for great fingerstyle:

But I think Ed has done well by bringing things that only guitarists care about into popular music, which isn't to be sniffed at in this day and age.

Legendary footage and tune, that is.

I've always loved "Who Knows" from that same set; it's a great riff.

Normally I'd say a good guitar video is an oxymoron as I usually hate the sound but by chance I was watching this earlier.

Not a playing video, but a creating one:-

How a Greenfield Acoustic Guitar is Made

The craftsmanship is well worth watching, but I'm not an acoustic player and - after investigating - I thought that prices that started at $10,500 was optimistic to say the least.

>>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64MmzR7EZ2o<<<

As I said, I'm no acoustic expert but that sounds very, very good indeed.
