Masters kits sound great recorded. Seen lots of studios use them so you're on the right track there.

I'm also going to throw out TRX Cymbals into the mix. A friend has a 22" ride which is like nothing else on this planet and sounded incredible when recorded. One of the biggest sounding cymbals I've ever heard. Also outlasted any of his Paiste 2002 rides!
Off topic but I've got to ask, when you say 'out lasted' is that meaning he managed to crack a ride cymbal?

Good shout for TRX I'll have a look at that.

I'd love to get a recording custom set but can't justify the expense at the moment!

On another note, the reason I got the electronic kit was to save my ears (I have custom IEMs but it's still loud.

Just discovered drum shields which is a brilliant idea. Anyone have any experience with these?

The other consideration for a rehearsal kit and cymbals is that it will get the fk kicked out of it by other drummers!

Indeed. Cracked one ride and two crash cymbals after 2 years of LOTS of gigs (We were a post hardcore band as well, so they really did get smashed about.) I dread to think how many low quality cymbals he would have gone through in that time!

Not so much technique breaking them, but he's a very powerful drummer. The TRX was actually so loud and dynamic he didn't have to hit as hard!

Some drummers hit a ride as they would a crash.

Fair enough I used to use oak 2Bs and managed to crack a Rude crash but never a ride, none of my friends in metal bands have either hence my surprise!

After much thought and considering the great advice given here I got a Pearl Masters Maple Complete kit with optimount toms, all gyrolock hardware and Sabian AAX performance kit (stage hats and 20" stage ride and 16" and 18" Xplosion crashes).

It's my first real drum kit (TD12 doesn't count right?) and it surely is a beautiful thing to behold in matt "caviar" black. Shame it's going to get the hell beaten out of it.

Thanks again for all your help. Just got to put the bloody thing together now!

On the plus side, you can get duct tape in matt black so at least it will match. biggrin

I've been thinking about getting rid of my acoustic kit and getting an electronic kit... Are you thinking of selling the TD-12 by any chance...?
Funk I've decided to sell my TD12 if you're still interested. I don't know how much it's worth (it's in very nick) so make me an offer if you're still after one, save me putting it on ebay.

Good choice with the AAX. They cut through lovely. Have used HHX in the past which I loved. Lots of people run a HHX/AAX Hybrid set up which could be worth looking into. Kit looks great as well!

Got it and replied.

Thanks for your comments Joe, I'll look into that!

BTW I ordered the Clearsonic drum shield and an AKG Concert 1 mic set plus a C451 for the hi-hats, seemed a good compromise of quality vs cost.

Got a 17" AAX chinese and 10" splash, this drum thing is addictive!

Booth almost finished, just needs a bit more acoustic treatment.

It's so quite now (and the drummer is a hard hitter) that we're going to have to mic up the kick for rehearsal.

Been reading up on recording and some suggest that the sound will not be "live" enough in the booth for recording. I can always take it down but any drummers who record here have any thoughts?

Nirvana, In Utero is a good example. Lots of Mics set up "Around" the drumset and the room as opposed to directly sticking on Mics. Obviously, Grohl is a Mammoth hitter and Albini had a big room, but its a great example of how the drum sounds in the room as opposed to just how the drum set sounds. We've recorded drums in a Warehouse before and that sounded great!
