Babymetal. Fast metal + female vocal, done the Japanese way. It's bonkers, but it's brilliant too. My discovery of the year, and this year started with Nightwish.

I have to say I do love Metronomy, genius.

5 albums in, the last 3 have been absolute blinders. First 2 aren't bad either.

Saw them live in Brixton last year, they were also great there to.
Thanks for this - just picked them on Spotify and loving it!!
Good news, they are superb.

For me, TesseracT
Can't seem to do wrong at the moment.
Used to like TesseracT. Starting to get a bit too complicated. That and the rant the drummer posted on Facebook asking fans to stop sending him demo tapes loser

Eclipse from Sweden head up my list. Every project Erik Martensson touches is gold in my opinion.
Never saw that rant; will try to find it... they changed singers and then changed back again; they've had their ups and downs - but they are a bit special, I think it's the bassist who is the main genius behind most of the material.

Ensiferum, the first two albums, discovered by way of Wintersun. Haven't yet got to their albums from after Jari Mäenpää left, I know the last two aren't so good but the two before are. They are just as good doing the older stuff live from what I've seen. Plus Netta cloud9I wouldn't mind a squeeze of her accordion...

Self titled debut though... close to flawless, great blend of folk metal and a bit of power metal and melodeth. I read fantasy novels, the lyrics are related to the Kalevala epic and Norse lore, but it's really evocative of all that sort of stuff.

I'd probably only listen as an aside, but I have watched them a bit biggrin Wonder what might happen afterwards, lead singer is very talented and would be a household name as a pop solo artist, but what about the other way? Check out Serenity in Murder, Japanese and female vocal, not clean here however wink

Did you like Endless Forms? I need to listen to it more, it's good but I was disappointed, Tuomas has done better. I don't know how aware you are of Floor Jansen outside of this, if you've listened to After Forever or heard Nightwish live? Imho she is the best female vocalist in metal (who else can do growls to operatic and in between so well?) and was the perfect choice, but I don't think he challenged her enough, she has 2+ gears more than most of the album.

Did you mean the other two? They are credited on the first album as "Scream, dance", which I thought was hilarious. I think they are a bit more talented than that. It certainly wouldn't be the same without them.

Endless Forms is still on the list, as it were; I thought five Nightwish albums in quick succession was enough. Floor is superb, but makes for a less unique sound than Tarja.

Probably Urfaust although don't do 'favourites' when it comes to music. However, if there was a current band I could see live it'd be them. Hopefully soon.

Not so much a band, but a guitarist - Nick Johnston. I've recently found the guy's music and it's brilliant, both easy to listen to and technical/clever in places too.

Going against the grain of new, less well-known bands posted thus far, I saw The Blockheads earlier this week. And they're as good as any band I've ever seen. Dragged out all the old Ian Dury albums, and not much today compares, IMO. Though I am a bit partial to a bit of Devin Townsend Project, and Animals As Leaders.

Liked Nothing But Thieves first album. I think they could develop into a pretty good band. Really good singer and nicely constructed songs with no padding. Musical rather than technical.

Sleaford Mods: hard to listen to but Jason Williamson is harder to ignore. A real punk band. And I love the way one guy just stands there with a beer.
