I used to love The Skids till I met Richard Jobson in person in the early 80s. He comes across as a decent guy on telly nowadays but he wasn't when I met him.

Well this may not be a popular post, judging by the comments so far, but I have shared a hotel for a week with Mr Geldof. He was there with his strangely-named daughters, not doing much, round the pool area, in the restaurants, in the bar, same as us. He was very civil, displayed no airs and graces, and I once saw him ask a waitress to come back as she walked away after delivering drinks. One of the daughters had forgotten to say thank you for her drink, and Geldof wanted to reinforce the lesson in manners.

I thought quite highly of him after that.

You'd think people would have more respect for Geldof given all the st he's been through, ex-wife and daughters suicide, that kind of thing.

This is PH, I suppose.

That gets him sympathy.

Miles Hunt from The Wonderstuff. Terrible band, terrible person.
This summer just gone my brother-in-law stage managed a local festival where Miles and Erica Nockalls were early on the bill.

As Miles arrived my B-i-L, himself a musician on the same bill, goes to chew the fat with him but was brusquely replied to with '"yeah yeah, let's just get on with it". B-i-L thinks "jeez, stroppy tt" and contemplates going home and burning his Wonderstuff collection.

As soon as he comes off stage, "Sorry about that mate, despite all the years I'm always a bit nervous about going on, and we were cutting it fine for our slot. What were you gonna say?. Cue half an hours chat about bands in the 90s over a beer and both parting on amicable terms.

Maybe you just caught him on a bad day too?

Interesting to see Ritchie Blackmore mentioned few times on this thread.

I remember going to see Rainbow in concert way back when and Blackmore came close to ruining the gig with his petulant, haughty and self indulgent ways. It was as if he forgot there was a paying audience out there. No doubting his talent though.
Christ, that's the most annoying thing about the bloke! Much like Al Di Meola I mentioned previously in this thread, talent to spare but as a person Ritchie does appear to be very disagreeable.

Compare and contrast with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani; both technically superior to Ritchie, but both (seemingly) to be much more affable people.

DELETED: Comment made by a member who's account has been deleted.
I think that's probably an accurate description, he does seem to say something really stupid occasionally. He's a workaholic by accounts. I remember reading someone called Housecore Records (his label) and he picked up, they left with a very good impression.

I think there's a new Superjoint Ritual record, so I don't know how opinions of him are now? That nazi salute incident seemed to dent people's opinion more than ever, I wouldn't know about the confederate flag business and similar things he apparently said in the Pantera days.

If we're talking metal; I'm not for organised religion at all, but any of the Black Metal bands involved in church burning and alike, are total pathetic s of the highest order.

A guy who worked with Van Morrison said there's two kinds of people, those who like Van Morrison and those who've met him.
Doesn't the same go for Chuck Berry?

ETA: I'm a huge Dylan fan but apparently he can be a total Richard Head to those outside his inner circle (strict instructions not to look at him directly or speak to him etc)

Just a who thinks he's a musician. Doesn't count.
Kenyan Waste is probably unaware of the meaning of the word "Musician", someone like Joe Satriani is a Musician with more virtuoso talent in a dead skin cell from between his toe's than that waste of space could have in a thousand lifetimes.

A member of my extended family (a relative's brother-in-law) has been in the music business since leaving school and now owns a management company managing a lot of bands. He's met pretty much everyone over the last 30+ years. From memory, the following would qualify for the ****s rating:

Boy George
Gary Kemp - pretentious ****
U2 - Bono definitely although Adam Clayton had a period when he was on the drugs and working his way through the world's supermodels. He's nice nowadays. Edge and Larry are both (apparently) quiet and unassuming.

The worst people my almost-relative says he has met are: Mel B (Spice Girls) and Amanda Holden.

I caught a interview with him on the radio aswell.

He was saying he never knew how to handle being famous , he thought it was going to be like a job where you do your 9-5 then your no longer working.

Paul Weller had a talk with him and advised him to just shake hands with the public but don't stop rather than ignore/abuse them because your not actually being the frontman of the wonderstuff at that time.

I suspect that would be the case for the majority of people from the punk / new wave bands, at least at the time.

Yep. And he plays with local session musicians rather than a touring band. And won't tell them in advance what the set list will be, or even which key he'll play each song in. Even when the musician is Keith Richards...
