Saw UB40 at Cambridge Corn Exchange last night.

Flashes of great stuff but, and I speak as a fan from decades ago, they were pretty poor.

It may just have been the sound system which was woeful.

The audience was made up of 75% who were just there to hear Red Red Wine and were slightly confused by some of the more obscure stuff they played from the back catalogue. Suited me and I hate Red Red Wine.
I think that it's a real lottery discovering which 'bands of yesteryear' are still any good.

The proper (1981-85) Sisters of Mercy were a significant contemporary band of my youth. I'd always been quite firm in my view not to revisit the 'heroes of my youth', but went, in 2011, to their 30th birthday party gig in London. I was *so* disappointed. It may as well have been a mediocre pub covers band.

Since then, I've tended to steer clear of such bands, but that experience hasn't been universal. The Human League, for example, have every ounce of energy they always had. if anything, Susan Sulley has more stage vivacity then ever! Still such a great night out.

I guess I'm glad that my own musical appreciation has never stopped evolving since my teens, so contemporary music always provides great gig opportunities. For those who never move on from their youth, I fear many will have less than awesome nights out.

I think you're right in so many ways.

We saw Gentleman's Dub Club at The Troxy and Fat Freddys Drop at Alley Pally and they were sharp and a great night out. GDC particularly.

The audience at the Corn Exchange can be hit and miss too. In fact they played GDC through the PA between the overrated Maxi Jazz and the E Type Boys and UB40 but I suspect 1% of the audience had heard of them.

It's a night out though, doesn't cost a fortune and unless one goes one can't have an opinion.

Of bands from my yoof, I'd like to see The Specials again, missed them on recent tours.

For some reason I have tickets to see The Hollies in the spring. I expect they are exactly the same as they have always been.

I have the Prodigy tonight for my final gig of the year, should be a great gig even if they are past their best.
Awesome set, sound system, and light show, marred by too much faffing between songs, they could have fitted in another couple of songs with all the rubbish between. I also wasn't pleased that the set was about an hour and a half long, if you are paying nearly £45 for the Civic and the support is a DJ who cost you a fiver to hire I think you can play a two hour set. Still, fantastic gig and glad I went.
