I'm looking to start learning how to play electric. I know the Internet is loaded full of resources to help teach yourself to a certain extent, but would you say that professional lessons are worth it?

There's a few music shops near me which do lessons, however I'm wondering whether it's necessary. I think if I were to go with lessons, I'd at least learn the very basics myself beforehand.

IMO, it is worth getting lesson!
Learning some of the basics before starting lessons, may or may not be a good thing, depending on what bad habits you teach yourself. Coming from a musical background always helps, though.
The drawback of trying to teach yourself is, it is very easy to plateau in your own, personal, comfort zone and very difficult to push yourself out of that comfort zone.
A good teacher will help you expand your comfort zone and increase your abilities.

If you want to make music then knowing the basics has to be a good thing, tuition would help.

If you want to just play along covering the music of others then I'd save your money. Plenty of online tuition regarding learning the music of others which doesn't cost anything. Combine that with something like TuxGuitar and it's associated files and you'll be belting them out in no time smile
