It seems another great has gone.

Vaguely knew about him from King Crimson, but really noticed him when he joined Wishbone Ash for their 11th album and then on to Asia (and left and joined again) etc. But didn't he do a lot!!!!?!!!

Much Sadness.

I was listening to Red this morning.

Tony Levin must be bricking it.

True..it seems not a day goes by now without the loss of a legend. Today it is Deke Leonard from Man. frown

OMG

Just setting off for my 3rd CruiseToTheEdge and Mr Wetton is still down on the Band List. He sent a video message last year as he missed that trip due to his illness. Saw him on the 1st one and he came across as a very nice humble bloke.

And last year it was Chris Squire who didn't make it for the trip so not a happy event.

It will certainly put a dampener on events again.frown

I can imagine it will. Weren't these cruises originally Chris Squires idea?

Yes pretty sure it was Chris Squire's idea ( hence the name) plus he seems to have got Steve Hackett ( who is back this time) involved.

The artists seem to have a great time too and have a high repeat visit count. Rumour has it Steve Rothery is coming even though he's not officially down. Last year he played with both Marillion and his own band ( and sampled plenty of the craft beer).

In Tampa now with freebie pre cruise gig planned for Monday with John Wesley (Porcupine Tree) and John Lodge (Moody Blues).

Mike Portnoy organised a great tribute to Chris Squire last year and is playing again. Hope they can do something similar for John Wetton but not much time to prepare anything.

Sounds interesting. Do you get the musicians wandering around the boat with rest of the passangers or do they stay out of sight? Ive heard steve howe is quite a private person.

They do formal Meet and Greet sessions with each band so you can get to ask questions and chat. Otherwise it's up to them but yes many freely mingle with the guests in the bars and restaurants and are more than happy to chat to what is after all a friendly audience. H from Marillion is always about but not seen Steve Howe mingling.

There is also an after hours jam venue where the guests (often semi-pro) play famous prog rock songs and many of the artists watch and even join in. I've seen Geoff Downes, Nad Sylvan (Hackett singer) and Jon Davidson (brilliant new Yes singer) all happily performing here and having a beer and a chat. It's brilliant and become a bit of a cult thing and a place for everyone to congregate. If you're musical you can put your name down to play.

My favourite week of the year and highly recommended if it's your sort of thing. Not at all expensive either.

Great idea chris had there. I saw steve at tavistock wharf a couple of years ago and it was a real privilege to be up close to a musician of that calibre. Asia were also going to do a gig there before steve bailed out and it was cancelledfrown Im sure you will all have a great time despite johns passing.

Well if anyone's interested, I'm just back off CruiseToTheEdge 2017 and it was the best yet.

Many of the bands paid their individual tributes to John Wetton rather than an organised show, for example Steve Hackett said some touching words about his friend and dedicated Afterglow to him: Yes did similar and played Asia's Heat of the Moment (not very well as it happens). There were also musical tributes to Greg Lake.

Even more mingling from the artistes this year so for example we got to chat to Jon Wesley about his time in Porcupine Tree with Steve Wilson, his favourite songs and chance of a reunion, a new Kansas member who was previously in a Rush tribute band, Steve Rothery about the old Fish era Marillion songs, Jon Davidson did a brilliant Turn of the Century at Jam Night plus many more. Steve Howe was even out eating in the buffet restaurant (as was Steve Hackett) and later I said hello and congratulated him on a great show but he just mumbled "thanks" and that was that!

The Headliners (Yes, Hackett, Kansas) were all excellent as expected but some great stuff from the supporting cast too. I've seen them before but Haken have upped their game and really stole the show with two powerful, pounding, performances: the two guitarists and bass player were relentless and never missed a beat.

Honourable mentions for Pain of Salvation and the always entertaining IO Earth with new female lead singer.

And to finish it off the grand finale of Mike Portnoy's first live performance of Dream Theater's 12 step suite:

He was joined on stage by assorted guests including most of Haken. Very loud and brilliant stuff.

Same again next year...
