Joseph's well in leeds, where every band ever played in their early days. The cockpit in leeds where every band ever played when they had outgrown the well, the new roscoe (also leeds) where every band ever who made had a tribute act based on them play!

Best I've seen was probably Parva (later kaiser chiefs) at the well, LCD sound system at the cockpit and glory days (Springsteen cover band) at the roscoe. I had the pleasure of working at the met student union bar for a
Few years, had some great bands play there over the years! (Much better venue than Leeds uni refectory)

West Runton Pavilion. Despite being a village just outside Cromer, in deepest North Norfolk, eveyone played there. Motorhead's first tour, Blizzard of Oz before anyone knew who they were (billed as a secret band) Rory Gallagher more times than I can remember and anyone who was anyone in the '70's.

Sadly missed, and now has a blue plaque, I believe.

Klooks Kleek in West Hampstead.

I lived just around the corner and spent a LOT of time there;
so many artists to mention, but The Graham Bond Organisation (with Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and John McLaughlin) were a regular favourite. Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, John Mayall, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Little Stevie Wonder, Julie Driscoll, Long John Baldry, Brian Auger and The Trinity ....
.... I could go on but it was the '60s and so I don't remember that much biggrin.

What was the venue/pub a few shops down from the The Town and Country Club in Kentish Town? Bull and Gate? or something similar I think.

Were all fields round there a cinema when I was at school. My youngest sisters however enjoyed it's social charms as a nightclub!

The Astoria on Charing Cross road in London. Really sad loss.
yes The sound wasnt great but I cant even count the amout of great nights I had there when I was younger.
It was an utter sthole, saw a lot of great gigs mind, symbolic of much thats right and wrong with alternative music venues be it pub/club/venue.

More of these mega-rich stars should be chucking a bit of their dosh into keeping the fleapit pubs and clubs open. Giving a bit back.

Lots of venues, and possibly too many bands to mention:

The Venue, Edinburgh - far too many, including Manic Street Preachers, when they were lucky to have a crowd no more than 100. Probably went to 50+ gigs there.

The Marquee, Charing Cross Road, London - travelled down from Edinburgh to see what was billed as the last ever Acid Reign gig, which was insane. Slam diving off the merch stall..

The Astoria and LA2 - both good venues, and sadly nothing much left in central London

The Point, Cardiff - excellent venue in an old church, killed off by noise complaints from neighbours who bought properties next door to a music venue..

The Arches, Glasgow - saw The Mission there years ago

Barfly/Bogiez, Cardiff - some smaller bands, but now part bar/part student accommodation.

Mayfair, Newcastle - didn't know this one had gone until recently. Drove there from Edinburgh, as a change to the Barrowlands in Glasgow, to see PWEI.

Sadly, too many music venues like The Point are falling victim to complaints from people who are happy to move into a property they know is next door to an established music venue, and then complain to the local authority because of noise..

Scene of my first gig, motorhead. and loads more great ones after that
More Motorhead gigs...Ramones...Henry Rollins...Faith no more...soundgarden...etc...etc..

Manchester international 1
Some memorable ones here too, soundgarden bringing down the ceiling comes to mindsmile

Blackpool Riffs
Got bigger names in than a tiny place with a 150 or so capacity had any right to.

There was also a little known band called Nirvana that also played there one night.
I was there for most of those. The Rollins Band played there around the same time, absolutely packed to the rafters. SNFU, mad as a box of frogs, Snuff loads of times, Leatherface, Joyce McKinney Experience, Sofahead, loads of other punk types.

Deaf Geoff or Flat Nose John, the choice of in house sound engineers, both dead now...

The Limelight - Crewe
Despite it being walking distance, I never went there over the many years it was open. I think it might just have been because I'm not that much into tribute bands, though they did have some name acts there as well. The new venue that the chap moved to suffered from being too far out of town, and is now flattened too. I've half an idea I'd heard someone was thinking of re-opening the Limelight, but I'm not sure.
