Ed Sheeran is a family member of mine.

He did the whole giving his parents nightmares thing by declaring at 16 he didn't want to go to university, he wanted to become a rock star...and the rest is history.

Unfortunately he is on my Dad's side with whom I don't have much contact (and they generally don't socialise as extended family) but from my limited contact aside from being very talented, he is a very unassuming and modest guy who lives for making music but not the celebrity it has given him. He always seems pretty uncomfortable on chat-shows etc to me.

Proud to say he is part of my family tree.

I watched the Live at Wembley DVD he seemed pretty chilled out for someone to play Wembley alone. He seems pretty chilled out in general.

I don't mind some of his stuff.

I liked his early stuff such as Number 5 Collaborations Project.

Current stuff is ok but not really my thing, but my wife and her sister hated his music when I was listening to it early in his career, they now love him.

At least he writes, plays, sings - no doubt very talented but he's not my thing nowadays

In my opinion he's about as bland as they come - utterly inoffensive music for those who like to think they like music, but don't really know much about it for those that buy his music by the truckload, as demonstrated by the sales figures.
I get your argument that you don't need to be an acclaimed singer songwriter to criticise a singer songwriter, but your posts (and others') do come across as pretty bitter against someone who no-one can deny is pretty successful. I'd argue it is close to impossible to be as successful as he is without the talent to back it up.

As I said before, I find the Beatle's music to be pretty crap on the whole, but I'd never suggest they weren't talented because they quite clearly were. Just not for me.
Just out of interest which bit of the Beatles music did you find to be crap? You could put a couple of light years of musical difference between the 'Please Please Me' and 'Abbey Road' albums.

As he's made over £100m already, you should make sure he's on your Christmas card list. smile

I don't get it myself, but I'm completely useless at music.

I guess even if he gives them a tiny cut of an awful lot they still walk away with a wedge of cash in their pockets.

Indeed!

To think that he could pay off my mortgage with the change in his pocket makes me wish the family on my Dad's side had not been such an unsociable bunch.

I am always surprised when i hear big numbers like this. Has he made 100m or the record company made 100m?

Most sources put him at current net worth of around £50m but presumably that doesn't take account of future earnings from the billion times we will hear his songs on various paid for platforms.

£35/£50/£100m - bottom line is he doesn't need to worry!

My Uncle said when he met him he didn't look like he had two pennies to rub together.

He is like James Blunt+

Seems like a lovely chap. Obviously has some talent, creates music I dislike.

He has. He's made around 33% of the Warner gross.

Jeez a lot of bitterness in this thread, fine you don't like the music, but I think sometimes that's just because its so popular.

I think he is incredibly talented, clearly worked his ass off to be able to play & sing & write songs like he can, loads of variety in it all too.
He is not a manufactured band ala simon cowell , one D and all that sort of stuff, so give the guy the praise he deserves. How on earth he can sell out Wembley & carry a whole series of concerts with a looper pedal , an acoustic guitar & a voice is remarkable to me

Really respect this guy for what he has achieved, incredible to have taken the 'popular' music scene by storm in this way and as I said to carry it off live the way he can shows what a talent he is

And as much as you may not like him due to his popularity , at least be grateful its a great artist that's getting the kudos, not a crappy manufactured sugar band

The game is about opinions... You can possess all the talent & work ethic in the world & still churn out what some consider to be dross. Doesn't make anyone more right or wrong than anyone else, but does make it a mistake to insist one way or the other.

Something interesting on the finances, AIUI most record companies work on the basis that one wildly successful artist effectively subsidises dozens of others that are punted & don't catch on. A weird business model when you don't have much of a clue whether your big investment will pay off but I suppose if your favourite band is Johnny Pervert & the grim notes who sell 1000 copies a decade then I guess you have good reason to thank the Ed Sheerans of the world for existing.
